Take advantage of technology

I’m writing to respond to a letter published in the Opinion page on November 16, in which the writer called for the option to renew identity cards online.

As someone in his 50s, I’ve lived long enough to remember the time when it only took a day to renew an identity card. I would go in the morning and the card would be ready for pick-up in the afternoon.

I agree with the writer that we have entered the digital age; everything can be done online these days, from grocery shopping to getting travel insurance. Technology is here to help us be more efficient in our day-to-day.

So why is the process of identity card renewal not among the services available online? After all, once a person reaches the age of 12 in the country, having an identity card becomes compulsory. Thus, it ought to be one of the priorities in the digital transformation scheme.

I hope to see the authorities take more seriously the need to speed things up; once digitalisation takes hold, the world will be moving at a much quicker pace. And if we don’t do something now while we still can, we will find ourselves severely lagging behind.
