Table tennis hotshots unearthed

The Brunei Darussalam Table Tennis Association (BDTTA) recently organised the Sultan’s Cup 2022 in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 76th birthday celebration.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad attended as the guest of honour.

This marked the first time BDTTA hosted such a prestigious event.

Various categories were contested – Men’s Open Singles, Women’s Open Singles, U19 Boys Singles, U19 Girls Singles, U15 Boys Singles, U15 Girls Singles, U12 Boys Singles and the U12 Girls Singles.

Awangku Abdul Basheer bin Pengiran Haji Muhammad Noor emerged champion in the Men’s Open Singles category, while Sia Mee Mee won the Women’s Open Singles category.

Meanwhile, Awangku Hilmanuddin bin Pengiran Haji Baharuddin won the Under-19 Boys’ Singles title, with Lim Yeu Jun winning the Under-15 title.

Ling Yi Zhen took home the Under-19 Girls Singles title, while Yumiko Woo Jing won the Under-15 Girls Singles category.

In the Under-12 boys category, Benjamin Tan Zi Bin was declared the winner, while the Under-12 girls category was won by Lim Khe Ying.

The tournament culminated in a final match for each category held at the Youth Centre in the capital.

BDTTA Patron Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Ratna Wijaya Brigadier General (Rtd) Pengiran Haji Hasnan bin Pengiran Ahmad and President of BDTTA Pengiran Haji Muhammad Noor bin Pengiran Haji Tajuddin also attended.

Participants have also been encouraged to take part in the association’s upcoming events including the Interschool Championship 2022.
