Sustainable designs are vital to community well-being

There is a need to ensure architects are able to integrate different sustainable designs to create quality space for the well-being of the community, said Chairperson of the Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) Committee on Social Responsibility (ACSR) Ar Thomas Cheung during the ARCASIA 2023 event yesterday.

It also featured a seminar on ‘Universal Design for Adaptive Reuse (UDAR) in Society’ with topics on ‘Architects’ Sustainable Social Responsibilities’ and ‘Universal Design: Architecture for All Enhancing Accessibility and Quality of Life’, by the ARCASIA Chairperson and adjunct professor Ar Adrianta Aziz. The event jointly organised by the Institution of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects (PUJA) Brunei and Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), also featured a presentation by ARCASIA President Ar Dr Abu Sayeed M Ahmed.

The seminar also featured presentations on topics on complex changing factors such as climate changes, digitisation and automation, old district renewal, rural urbanisation, changing demographics and waste management, encouraging architects in finding the way to implement social responsibilities in a sustainable way. Meanwhile, under the talk on ‘Universal Design: Architecture for All Enhancing Accessibility and Quality of Life’ adjunct professor Ar Adrianta Aziz touched on the universal design being the guiding philosophy that extends beyond accessibility for people with disabilities.

True beauty and comfort can only be achieved if the architecture can be accessed by all to perform their tasks independently, he added.
