Study findings key to co-existing with crocodiles

With the recent rise in the number of crocodile incidents in the country, I am curious on the status of research into the crocodile population that was raised during the Legislative Council meeting earlier this year. According to the authority at the time, 90 per cent of the research had completed in the Brunei-Muara District, and would be extended to the remaining districts.

There are conversations on social media and other platforms on how there should be more hunting of crocodiles and the culling of their numbers to safeguard human life.

It is unfortunate that these creatures also happen to be dangerous, but they are part of the overall ecosystem. Reckless hunting can lead to severe, unintended consequences, as we have seen in other nations when species are introduced or removed from the ecology.

The publication of the crocodile study and its findings will be key to existing sustainably besides our reptilian neighbours.
