Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh attended the WorldSkills Conference 2024 from September 10 to 12 at Eurexpo Lyon, France.
The conference was held alongside the 47th WorldSkills Competition, taking place from September 11 to tomorrow.
Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah was accompanied by Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, and ministry officials.
Under the theme ‘Moving Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to the Top of the Global Agenda’, the conference focused on the significance of TVET and skills in driving human and economic development.
The event brought together ministers, deputy ministers, senior officials, and representatives from global organisations including the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), International Labour Organisation (ILO), European Commission (EC), African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), WorldSkills International (WSI), and the WorldSkills Champions Trust (WSCT).
The conference was inaugurated by France’s Minister for Labour, Health and Solidarity Catherine Vautrin, France’s Minister for National Education and Young People Nicole Belloubet, and President of WSI Chris Humphries.
They welcomed stakeholders in the TVET field to discuss the next steps in advancing global TVET initiatives and fostering concrete actions for countries to strengthen their systems.
Several panel discussions and roundtables were held, covering ‘How Do We Create Excellence in TVET System’, ‘Tools and Strategies Required for Quality Assurance in TVET’, and ‘Foundational Skills for Better TVET’.
Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah also met Singapore’s Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Education and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Mohammad Maliki bin Osman to discuss bilateral cooperation in education.
Brunei’s MoE delegation, led by Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah, also visited the 47th WorldSkills Competition, the world’s largest skills competition, organised every two years by WSI.
The event featured 1,500 young competitors from over 65 countries competing in 62 skill areas across sectors including construction, industry, new technologies, services, food, creative, digital, and hospitality. – James Kon
