Stories from the road

In the bustling streets of Brunei, where tradition meets modernity, cab drivers have become the unsung storytellers of the city. These drivers, whether full-time or part-time, weave through the daily rhythms of life, collecting tales that resonate with human connection and the shared experiences of those they encounter.

A RIDE THROUGH LIFE’S HIGHS AND LOWS

For over five years, Hadzman has been a dedicated hail cab driver, navigating the roads with a calm demeanour and a heart full of stories. His decision to become a cab driver was initially driven by practicality – a way to earn extra income, encouraged by his family. But over time, the profession has revealed itself as a window into the lives of others, offering lessons that extend far beyond the steering wheel.

One of the most poignant memories Hadzman recalls involves a passenger who asked him to wait at a cemetery. The passenger, in town for his last week in Brunei, visited his young daughter’s grave – a moment that deeply moved Hadzman. It was a stark reminder of the delicate balance between life’s joys and sorrows, a theme that often plays out in his daily encounters.

The challenges of the job are not lost on him. From navigating difficult terrains to dealing with sudden storms, Hadzman has faced it all. Yet, the hardest part of the job, he said, is managing difficult passengers. His approach is simple but effective: deliver them safely to their destination, report the incident to the company, and move on. His motivation, rooted in faith and the desire to provide for his family, keeps him going.

Over the years, the rise of ride-sharing apps has changed the landscape of his work. The competition has increased, but so has the efficiency, thanks to continual updates.

As for the future of the traditional cab industry, Hadzman believes it has a place, but it’s up to the industry to evolve in ways that benefit everyone involved.

What has this job taught him about people? “We’re all the same, yet different in our own ways,” he said, a sentiment that underscores the universal human experience. He advises passengers to approach their rides with a positive attitude, making the most of the journey, whether through meaningful conversation or quiet reflection.

Hadzman has formed lasting relationships with over 30 passengers. He connects with people from all walks of life, sharing jokes and stories that bridge the gap between blue-collar and white-collar worlds. While some experiences are too personal to share, he knows that he has made a difference in the lives of many – a testament to the power of small acts of kindness.

FROM MEDIA TO THE ROAD

Lance’s journey as a hail cab driver began in early 2018, marking a shift from his 15-year career in the media industry to the freedom of the open road.

As one of the first drivers to join Brunei’s ride-hailing programme, Lance embraced the change as an opportunity to meet people from diverse backgrounds and to work on his own terms.

For Lance, the job is more than just a way to earn money; it’s a chance to connect with others on a human level.

One of the most impactful conversations he recalls was with an elderly Australian doctor visiting Brunei during Chinese New Year.

Her advice – to learn to say no and take care of oneself before helping others – left a lasting impression on Lance. It was a reminder of the importance of self-care in a world that often demands too much.

Although Lance may not remember the names of all his passengers, he treasures the heartfelt exchanges they’ve shared. These moments, small yet significant, are what he lives for, proving that sometimes, the simplest gestures – a warm greeting, a kind word – can make all the difference in someone’s day.

THE ROAD AHEAD

Both Hadzman and Lance highlight a crucial aspect of being a cab driver: it’s not just about transporting people from one place to another; it’s about being part of their journey, even if only for a short while.

Their stories remind us that behind every ride is a person with their own hopes, challenges, and wisdom to share. As the cab industry continues to evolve, these drivers remain at the heart of the experience, proving that human connection will always be the most valuable part of the journey. – Fadley Faisal
