Special needs students get a boost

Thirty special needs students received specialised equipment to aid with their learning and mobility donated by the Junior School of Jerudong International School (JIS).

Junior School Council members presented the learning resources to students from local primary and secondary institutions during a student led assembly.

During the ceremony, the student council introduced the activities of the school’s annual Fundraising Week and raised BND10,328 for the special needs students.

Acting Director of Schools and the Special Education Unit at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Eddy Fazlin bin Haji Amdan was the guest of honour.

Officers from the Special Education Unit at the MoE, junior school students and staff members were also present. The children are chosen in consultation with the Special Education Unit at the MoE and this enables JIS’ Junior School to present children with equipment such as laptops, wheelchairs and a variety of other learning resources to help them with their learning and mobility needs. JIS Junior School Head Paul Bannister said, ”We are immensely proud of the Junior School children, parents and teachers for raising this money and we look forward to see how the learning resources we provided make a difference to those children who receive them.”

Among the activities were ‘Wet Sponge a Teacher’, ‘Bake Sale’, ‘Coin Drop’, ‘Launch a Teddy’, ‘Disco on the Helipad’ and ‘Dress up Day’.

A popular activity was the ‘Coin Drop’ where students collected coins which they rolled down pipes from the first floor of the Junior School building to the ground level into troughs of water.

The Bake Sale saw Year 6 students from the Junior School Council selling baked goods during the morning breaks while ‘Launch a Teddy’ saw students designing parachutes to keep their teddy bears in the air as long as possible.

‘Wet Sponge a Teacher’ saw teachers volunteering to be soaked by students.
