Singapore chief justice on working visit to Brunei

Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon of the Supreme Court of Singapore, along with a delegation of six members from the Singapore judiciary are on a working visit to Brunei Darussalam until today, at the invitation of the Chief Justice of the Brunei Supreme Court Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong.

The visit commenced with a specialised briefing hosted by the Sultanate’s Supreme Court on Wednesday, which saw Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Singapore, Justice Kannan Ramesh, deliver insights on concurrent cross-border insolvency and restructuring proceedings.

Singapore High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Laurence Bay Siow Hon was present.

Yesterday, Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong hosted the inaugural bilateral meeting between the judiciaries of Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.

The meeting marked a milestone following the signing of a memorandum of understanding in July 2023 in Singapore, aimed at strengthening communication, collaboration, and cooperation in dispute resolution and avoidance. It saw discussions on themes including judicial education, training, administration, family justice and deeper exploration into insolvency and restructuring matters.

Chief Justice Menon also delivered a keynote speech on ‘The role of an effective and efficient judiciary in promoting economic development: the Singapore perspective’ at the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam.

In his opening remarks, Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong emphasised the pivotal role of a robust judicial system in supporting economic growth initiatives in the Sultanate.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad, Chief Syar’ie Judge Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar, Attorney General Datin Paduka Hajah Nor Hashimah binti Haji Mohammed Taib and Deputy Minister (Security and Law) at the Prime Minister’s Office Dato Seri Paduka Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu were also present, alongside over 230 participants. – Fadley Faisal
