Serial burglar’s appeal dismissed

A serial burglar’s appeal against his jail sentence of five years and two months and two strokes of cane was dismissed by the Court of Appeal presided by Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong.

Sitting with Justices Conrad Seagroatt and Michael Peter Burrell on November 23, the court saw no merit in Adib Sufri bin Mohd Asri’s application.

The court reflected on respondent prosecutor Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli’s submissions against the defendant, including the facts of the case.

Adib Sufri drove to a house in Kampong Sungai Hanching in the early hours on January 22 and broke into it and made away with items valued over BND2,600.

The house occupants had gone away for holiday and a neighbour noticed the kitchen door left open.

The neighbour reported to the house owner and checked on the house to find it ransacked.

A police report was filed.

On February 16, Adib Sufri broke into a house in Jalan Pasir Berakas where he stole BND300 and personal items, including gadgets worth BND3,900.

The following night, the defendant struck a makeshift office in Kampong Manggis Satu where he stole some cash and other items.

The appellate court weighed on the multiple offences committed over a short span of time and Adib Sufri’s five previous theft-related convictions committed between 2017 and 2019. – Fadley Faisal
