Sarawak on alert for water woes during hot and dry spell

ANN/THE STAR – Water authorities in Sarawak, Malaysia have been placed on alert to monitor supply facilities during the current hot and dry spell, which is forecast to last until August.

State Utilities and Telecommunication Minister Julaihi Narawi said the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), Kuching Water Board, Sibu Water Board and LAKU Management Sdn Bhd had activated their action plans to mitigate the impact of the dry season on consumers’ water supply.

He said several areas throughout Sarawak may experience supply issues such as low water pressure during the hot and dry spell.

“In addition, several water treatment plants may be affected by insufficient raw water and could reach a critical stage, such as the Melugu and Pantu water treatment plants (WTP) in Sri Aman and Penibong WTP in Mukah if there is still no rain in the coming weeks.

“The situation for water sources and other water supply facilities in each of the drought-affected areas in Sarawak is being monitored by the water supply authorities,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Julaihi urged community leaders and consumers to immediately report to their water authorities should they encounter very low pressure or supply disruption, so that immediate action can be taken.
