S Korea’s KCCI gears up for APEC leadership role

SEOUL (ANN/THE KOREA HERALD) – South Korea’s Chair of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and the SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won is set to lead the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in Korea next year.

Announced on Sunday, this comes as the event’s preparatory committee was officially launched. The summit is the largest gathering of business leaders in the region and promises to attract significant international attention.

The APEC CEO Summit will take place alongside the annual APEC Summit, which gathers 21 heads of state and around 1,000 business leaders. The event will serve as a platform for dialogue between the public and private sectors, fostering collaboration across the Asia-Pacific region.

Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang Province has been selected as the host city for the 2025 APEC Summit, making it the first time in 20 years that Korea will host the event. The last APEC Summit in Korea was held in 2005 in Busan.

In its role as the Korean branch of the APEC Business Advisory Council, the KCCI will oversee various business meetings and represent the interests of Korean enterprises during the summit discussions.

The organisation aims to leverage its extensive global networks to ensure a productive gathering.

This year’s APEC CEO Summit is scheduled for November 14 and 15 in Peru. During the event, Chairman Chey will assume the leadership mantle from outgoing chair Fernando Zavala.

Other Korean business leaders, including HS Hyosung Vice Chairman Cho Hyun-sang, Kolon Group Vice Chairman Lee Kyu-ho, and MegazoneCloud CEO Lee Joo-wan, are also set to participate.

Park Il-joon, KCCI vice chairman, highlighted the significance of hosting the summit: “It is the first time in 20 years that Korea hosts the APEC Summit. For a successful event, KCCI will make full use of our global networking capabilities.

“We will intensify our efforts to ensure that the CEO Summit fosters connections among businesses, governments, and member nations, achieving tangible results for sustainable growth across the region.”
