An Indonesian maid who ran from her employer since 2022 was arrested by the Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD) enforcement team and produced in court yesterday where she was sentenced to serve jail for five months for overstaying her employment pass.
Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif also ordered 30-year-old Mia Marisa to settle BND800 in fines, or risk serving another month in default of payment.
Immigration Prosecutor Adi Yusra Adanan revealed in court that the defendant had fled from her employer in March 2022, where she had since worked on a freelance basis to earn a living.
Mia’s employer filed a police report when she went missing and informed the immigration as well, handing over her passport to the authorities.
According to the Indonesian Embassy, the defendant once sought for help by contacting an embassy staff on WhatsApp in March, however, she was later out of reach when the staff realised that their number had been blocked by the defendant.
The defendant was arrested in a raid conducted by the INRD at 2.49am on August 3 when they found her at a rented room in a commercial complex building in Gadong. – Fadley Faisal
