Royal Bees sting Bahrain in final group match

The Brunei Darussalam national netball team ended their group stage match in the 13th Asian Netball Championships (ANC) on a positive note after defeating Bahrain 88-28 at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium in Bangalore, India on Wednesday.

The national netball team, also called as Royal Bees, finished Group ‘B’ with three victories and three defeats overall.

The match was evenly poised in the first six to seven minutes of the first quarter but Brunei pulled ahead and showed their superiority to take the opening quarter 27-9.

The Royal Bees built on their strong momentum and opened up 49-15 in the second quarter and 69-23 lead in the third to strengthen their foothold for a second successive win.

Brunei limited their opponents to just five goals in the fourth quarter as they scored another huge winning margin, just a day after their record-breaking 106-point haul against newcomers Iraq.

Earlier during a pre-match interview, national head coach Thilaka Jinadasa said, “The players had a very good game (against Iraq) and they had a better shooting average.

“They executed the strategies well as we planned. I’m sure the players will stick to the same strategies against Bahrain and do what they have to do on court on time.

“I think mainly we have to maintain our strategies to go for the long ball and go for accurate shooting and to finish off the game with a good score.”

The team picked up their first win against Chinese Taipei with victories also coming in against debutants Iraq and Bahrain.

They also suffered losses against Thailand, Hong Kong and heavily-fancied Singapore. – FADHIL YUNUS
