Recent Laksamana College of Business (LCB) graduates were upbeat as they looked back on their academic journeys and conveyed optimism for the future.
Syron Eugene Liew always felt like technology is continuously evolving and rapidly improving people’s lives. Having had this feeling when he wanted to pursue his higher learning, he took a Bachelor’s programme in computer science at LCB.
Syron said his college experience was exciting and challenging, as the assignments encouraged students to work together as a team and promoted self-revision to fully grasp the topic at hand.
At the same time, the resources provided by LCB are abundant, as they are filled with not only experienced lecturers but also a library of endless materials to refer from.
Syron added that he is currently looking for a job in IT to gain experience and enhance his skills for the future and, most importantly, to help provide financial aid to his family.
Ivy Wong Ker Hsing loved how interactive and helpful LCB lecturers were and said she is privileged to have met lots of friends from different parts of the Sultanate, including Kuala Belait and Temburong, adding that she will cherish the moments she had with them.
A graduate in BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance Ivy is currently employed at audit firm.
She shared that venturing into the working world is different from studying, because she needs to socialise even more and open up to different kinds of people. However, she has learnt a lot from the career and hopes to learn even more in the future.
“I would love to pursue my studies further, which I am doing now as well. I hope to upgrade myself through this process of working and learning,” she said.
“I would like to thank my parents for being by my side throughout my four years in LCB.
“They have been with me during the nights of doing assignments and studying for exams, they have witnessed my ups and downs. I wish them health and wealth in the years to come. And this time, I will be the one who will be by their side.”
Meanwhile, Angela Yong Chyi Fang, a student who excelled and earned first class honours in BA (Hons) International Tourism Management, said it felt like it was just yesterday that they had their first physical class, first online class and first assignment.
She recalled the excitement of the first trip together as tourism students, discussions for assignments, sleepless nights due to assignments and dissertations, and moments when they attended online classes. Despite the struggles, their effort and hard work paid off.
She said her four years at LCB – from HND to degree – have been a wonderful journey as she learnt and experienced a lot from the course and from being part of student council.
“I am thankful to my family, lecturers, classmates and friends who have helped me in pursuing my goals and inspired me to achieve them. To my family, thank you for always putting full trust in me and giving me reassurance when I doubt myself. To our lecturers, Ms Fayya, Mr Naza, Ms Athirah, Dr Leigh and Dr Paul, thank you for your support and advice. To my classmates and friends, we were pulled out of our comfort zones and pushed into a new environment. I am proud to say that we made it. Without you, I wouldn’t have come this far.”
Miral Kashif, who also graduated with a first class honours in BA (Hons) Business Management, shared that they spent the past few academic years preparing for what was to come in the professional world.
She thanked her “amazing coursemates for making the three years feel incredible”, and expressed “gratitude to the lecturers and staff members who made the experience extraordinary”.
Graduate Mohd Farkhan bin Haji Mohd Alizam majored in accounting and finance, said he chose the programme because it produces professionals with strong technical skills and well-rounded business experience, while enabling the learning of strategic thinking and problem-solving skills to help any business and organisation make sound decisions. He also noted potential job opportunities.
Mohd Farkhan is among the lucky graduates who was offered a job as an auditor with an international accounting firm months after he finished his final exams.
Having worked right after completing his degree programme, Mohd Farkhan applied some of the knowledge and skills gained from LCB. However, college is just a starting point where you learn lots of theories and basics, said Mohd Farkhan.
“After you enter the working world, there is still a lot to learn such as more advanced knowledge in accounting, gain more experience, character and confidence.”
Marisa Amani binti Mohammad Noor, who graduated with a Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Culinary Arts and Supervision, dreams of becoming a chef just like her parents, and aims to pursue her owen culinary journey.
“It is my dream to become a chef, so I hope the skills, knowledge and all I’ve learnt in school and industry will take me somewhere I’ve been dreaming to go,” she said.
Marisa Amani plans to venture into the working world before she continues her studies, as her mother wants her to pursue further studies at Le Cordon Bleu in Australia.
