Promotion of regional sports also fosters connection, says minister

The work between ASEAN and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) to leverage on traditional sports and games in promoting the sports industry in Southeast Asia also plays an important role in fostering connection, enhancing cultural identity and nurturing a sense of community, unity and inclusivity in the Sultanate as well as the region.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad said this during the 7th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports from August 31 to September 2 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The minister was accompanied by Director of Youth and Sports Development at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Hajah Zainab binti Haji Morshidi.

The event, chaired by Thai Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, served as a platform for ASEAN and its stakeholders to exchange views, discuss policies and strengthen cooperation in realising an active regional community.

The meeting continued with the 4th ASEAN+Japan Ministerial Meeting on Sports to further solidify the collaboration between ASEAN and Japan on sports. It was co-chaired by Ratchakitprakarn and Japanese State Minister at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ide Yosei.

Meanwhile, the first ASEAN+China Ministerial Meeting on Sports was co-chaired by Ratchakitprakarn and Chinese Vice Minister of General Administration of Sport Wang Ruilian.
