Peak experience

Yr Wyddfa, commonly known as Snowdon, is the highest mountain in Wales and also the highest point in the British Isles outside the Scottish Highlands. It is located in Snowdonia National Park in Gwynedd, Wales. Yr Wyddfa stands at an elevation of 1,085 metres above sea level.

The mountain is a popular destination for hikers and climbers, offering several trails of varying difficulty to reach its summit.

Snowdon is not only renowned for its natural beauty but also for its cultural significance, being steeped in Welsh folklore and history. “Yr Wyddfa” is pronounced as “ur-with-va” in Welsh.

On average, hikers typically take around four to six hours to hike up and down Snowdon.

But our hike took one extra hour due to unforeseen circumstances. We veered off course but managed to get back on the right path. The day began with an early start, arriving at Bangor Train Station around 9am.

From there, we hopped into a local taxi, bound for the starting point of our ascent. Despite a rocky start with a reckless driver, which unfortunately led to one of our companions succumbing to motion sickness, we pressed on with unwavering determination.

Our trek commenced with the meticulous preparation of gear – ensuring shoes were securely tied, gloves snugly fitted, and beanies pulled tight.

With spirits high and anticipation mounting, we set forth along the path marked by a sign bearing the name “Yr Wyddfa, Snowdon,” a reassuring beacon guiding our way.

As we traversed the Pyg Track, the landscape unfolded before us in a breathtaking panorama.

Majestic lakes glistened in the sunlight, snow-capped mountains towered in the distance, and fellow adventurers dotted the trail, their spirits buoyed by the perfect weather and pristine conditions.

Yet, as we ascended further, the challenge became palpable. Each step up the rocky terrain tested our endurance, prompting much-needed breaks to catch our breath and regroup.

The snowy path proved particularly treacherous, underscoring the importance of proper equipment – a lesson learned for future expeditions. Amidst the struggle, we encountered unexpected companions – a group of Malaysians from Leeds, united in our pursuit of the summit. Though time constraints prevented prolonged interaction, the companionship shared in that fleeting moment left a lasting impression.

Descending via the Miner’s Track, we encountered remnants of a bygone era – ruins of old mines and run-down stone structures hinting at a rich history. Yet, our journey took an unexpected turn as we veered off course, navigating precarious paths and impromptu snowball fights with fellow hikers in tow.

But the most exhilarating part of our descent came when we stumbled upon an unmarked, seemingly forbidden path.

Undeterred by warnings, we embarked on an adrenaline-fueled climb up a near-vertical rock wall – a daring feat that left us exhilarated and united in our triumph over the rugged terrain.

Despite the challenges, the journey was not without its rewards.

A lost phone miraculously found its way back to its owner, and a spectacular red moonrise marked the culmination of our adventure – a timely reminder of the beauty and serenity found in nature’s embrace.

Retreating to the comforts of our hostel, we shared tales of triumph and hardship over a modest dinner, the taste of victory lingering in each bite. As I reflect on the day’s events, I am reminded of the power of perseverance and the thrill of exploration.

In conclusion, my experience hiking Snowdon serves as a testament to the boundless opportunities awaiting those who dare to venture beyond their comfort zones. It is a reminder that with determination and courage, even the tallest mountains can be conquered.

As I pen these words, I hope to inspire others to embrace the spirit of adventure and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.

For in the journey of life, it is not merely the desti nation that matters, but the experiences and lessons gained along the way.

Cheers to the adventures that await! – Mohamad Nur Raziqqien Abu Bakar
