AFP – Rory McIlroy teed off in the final round of the Masters in search of an elusive first green jacket that would complete a career Grand Slam.
The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland, who has failed in 10 prior tries to complete the Slam at Augusta National, was on 12-under with a two-stroke lead over last-group playing partner Bryson DeChambeau.
It’s a rematch of a late duel with DeChambeau at last year’s United States Open that saw McIlroy bogey three of the last four holes, two of them misses from three feet or less, while DeChambeau saved par from a bunker at the 72nd hole to win the title.
“Just excited for the opportunity,” DeChambeau said . “It’s going to be a great battle.”
They will chase a record USD4.2 million winner’s prize from a record USD21 million purse, but so much more on the line for McIlroy.

ANN/THE STAR – If the 24 per cent reciprocal tariff by the United States (US) on Malaysia were to take effect in the near term, this will increase the likelihood of Bank Negara revising the benchmark lending rate – the overnight policy rate (OPR).
Most experts, however, said the central bank is unlikely to cut rates based solely on tariffs, as there are other factors to be taken into account.
On April 2, the US government launched baseline tariffs of 10 per cent on all imports to the US and reciprocal tariffs on trade partners on April 9.
In the latest twist on the tariff saga, the US now said it will impose a 10-per-cent tariff for 90 days on more than 75 countries that were willing to negotiate with the US. Negotiations during the tariff pause will decide whether tariffs on Malaysia would be lifted, maintained at 24 per cent or reduced.
The OPR was maintained at three per cent at the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in March. The benchmark lending rate has remained unchanged since May 2023.
Economist Anthony Dass told StarBiz if the 24- per-cent reciprocal tariff is maintained on Malaysian imports, coupled with broader global tariff retaliation and rising geopolitical uncertainty, the probability of Bank Negara adjusting its monetary policy stance in 2025 has increased.
“While the OPR is currently maintained at three per cent, downside risks from escalating trade headwinds could warrant a reassessment should external shocks significantly weaken the macroeconomic outlook,” he noted.
Dass, who is the senior economic adviser at KSI Strategic Institute for Asia-Pacific and also the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) executive director, however, said the central bank is unlikely to pre-emptively lower interest rates in response to US tariffs alone.

Any monetary easing would likely be conditional upon various factors, he said.
They include a sustained and broad-based deterioration in export performance and foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, a subdued inflation environment or clear disinflationary trends, and a stable ringgit without heightened volatility that could destabilise capital markets or erode investor sentiment.
For now, he said domestic demand remained the primary engine of growth for Malaysia in 2025. The outlook is supported by a healthy labour market, steady wage gains, accommodative fiscal measures and continued momentum in infrastructure spending.
“Nonetheless, escalating external headwinds – especially from tit-for-tat tariffs and shifting global supply chains – pose meaningful downside risks to net exports, private investment and foreign capital flows.
“That said, resilience is expected from ongoing large-scale public infrastructure projects, direct fiscal transfers to lower-income groups and a continued recovery in tourism.
“These buffers, however, may not be sufficient to fully offset the broader drag from a deteriorating global trade environment,” Dass said, adding that he had revised the 2025 gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast downward, from 4.5 per cent to 5.5 per cent to a range of four per cent to 4.9 per cent. The GDP growth target for this year is between 4.5 per cent and 5.5 per cent versus 5.1 per cent in 2024.
OCBC Bank senior Asean economist Lavanya Venkateswaran said the downside risks to growth have risen from these tariffs.
This is as central banks globally and Bank Negara are faced with a high degree of uncertainty.
“The first course of action during volatile times is to prevent a further backsliding of sentiment, and handle the foreign-exchange market volatility.
“Monetary policy support could follow once it’s clear that growth and the real economy have been hit.
“The OPR cannot directly address any trade-related issues. The issues at hand are related to the fundamental dynamics of the economy and the trade with the US.
“The role of the OPR can be one of the tools of counter-cyclical support once it’s clear that economic growth will be impacted,” she said.
Venkateswaran said domestic demand in terms of already planned investments and near-term household spending would likely hold up, while exports to the US would continue to be frontloaded as reciprocal tariffs are delayed.
Furthermore, she said the government’s clear medium-term agenda for crucial sectors such as semiconductors would provide a buffer to growth.
In addition, she said plans to broaden the growth base beyond Selangor and Penang into Johor, diversifying trade partners are also positives for the growth trajectory.
Centre for Market Education Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Carmelo Ferlito reckoned that, under the current circumstances and with potential tensions on the ringgit, lowering the interest rate would be ineffective, if not even harmful.
“Gradually, the actual intentions of the US government it seems to me is that the ultimate goal is not the tariff per se but forcing trading nations back at the discussion table with the US for them to regain a prominent role in the international trade scenario,” he said.
Ferlito said under the current scenario, the main GDP component to keep under observation is international trade, to assess if import and export trends change. But it is early to say at this juncture and would have to wait to see the actual US game plan and the local reaction, he said.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd Chief Economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said monetary policy has always been the first line of defence when it comes to stabilising economic growth.
“Bank Negara has built its policy space and given the risks of inflation are fairly contained, a 25 basis points cut in OPR is appropriate in my view. Perhaps it might happen in the second half of the year, possibly in the July meeting.
“There is always a chance that the central bank might want to lower the OPR as the tariff would compromise the outlook on Malaysia’s export. Given that the exports to the US accounted for 13.2 per cent of total exports, and it is the second largest export market, any reduction in demand would be a material event to the local economy,” he said.
Mohd Afzanizam added that the bank has revised its GDP forecast from 4.7 per cent to 4.1 per cent.
JAKARTA (AFP) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said Qatar is set to invest USD2 billion in his country’s new sovereign wealth fund as he looks to boost economic growth.
Prabowo is on a five-nation tour of the Middle East, visiting the United Arab Emirates, Turkiye, Egypt, Qatar and Jordan to boost bilateral ties with the region.
He said he had a “productive” meeting with Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and that the country would invest in the Danantara Indonesia fund.
Danantara Indonesia was launched in February by President Prabowo Subianto who pledged to ramp up annual growth from five to eight per cent, while ordering billions of dollars in government cuts. The fund will take control of government holdings in state companies with an initial budget of USD20 billion.
It is the country’s second sovereign wealth fund, after the Indonesia Investment Authority, which was launched in 2021 and holds USD10.5 billion in assets.
Danantara announced its full board line-up last month with American billionaire Ray Dalio and former Thailand prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra appointed as advisors.
Jakarta has planned more than 20 energy projects worth around USD40 billion this year, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said in March, partly funded by Danantara.

AFP – Virat Kohli hit a landmark half-century and spinner Karn Sharma returned 3-36 to trigger an opposition collapse in the IPL as Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians won on Sunday.
Kohli hit 62 for his 100th half-century in T20 cricket to lead Bengaluru to a crushing nine-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.
The second match of the day was a thriller with Mumbai pulling off a 12-run victory to end Delhi’s winning streak in their home at Feroz Shah Kotla ground.
Chasing 206 for victory, Delhi looked to be cruising at 135-2 when Karun Nair departed on 89. Leg-spinner Karn soon triggered a collapse to bowl out the hosts for 193 in their home Feroz Shah Kotla ground.
“Winning is always special,” said Mumbai skipper Hardik Pandya. “Especially in games like this. You have to keep fighting and it means a lot.”
It was Delhi’s first defeat after four wins in this edition of the T20 tournament. Five-time champions Mumbai got back to winning ways with just their second victory in six matches.
Needing 23 runs off the last 12 balls, Ashutosh Sharma raised hopes with two boundaries off Jasprit Bumrah but the last three balls of the 19th over threw up three run-outs.
“I always believe fielding is something which can change the game upside down,” said Pandya. “We were switched on, didn’t give up and they got the chances and converted. Amazing.”
The win dampened the return of Delhi’s Nair, who hit a valiant knock off 40 balls in his first IPL match after three years.

His Royal Highness made the remarks in a sabda during the unveiling of the first-ever Women in Sport Strategic Plan by BDNOC during the 2nd OCA Gender Equity Seminar hosted in the Sultanate at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom, The Empire Brunei yesterday.
His Royal Highness also expressed, “Let’s ensure that women athletes have the opportunity to shine on their terms and create pathways for leadership roles in sport beyond competition.”
His Royal Highness, who is also an Honorary Executive Board Member of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), further underscored, “Over the next two days, let’s focus on actionable outcomes – building partnerships, developing initiatives and setting the stage for a future where gender equity is the norm.”
Describing the transformative power of sport, His Royal Highness said it holds immense power – empowering individuals, fostering leadership and building communities.
Under the theme ‘Watch Her Shine’, His Royal Highness stressed, “‘Watch Her Shine’ is not just about celebrating women athletes, it’s a call to drive real change.
“We must ensure women have the support and opportunities to succeed in sport. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) can play a crucial role by utilising OCA/OS funds to promote female participation at all levels of sport.”
Copies of the Women in Sport Strategic Plan were distributed among participants of the seminar. Four focus areas were identified in the strategic plan: Leadership and Governance, Active Participation, Promotion and Advocacy, as well as Research and Development.
For Leadership and Governance, the objective is to promote leadership roles for women within sporting bodies and to foster mentorship programmes for aspiring female leaders.
Meanwhile, Active Participation aims to develop opportunities and structures that encourage sustained participation of girls and women in sports and reduce dropout rates among girls in physical activities.
In the area of Promotion and Advocacy, the goal is to raise awareness about the importance of women and girls at all levels and to promote gender equality in sports through educational campaigns and advocacy efforts.
Research and Development focuses on developing action-based research to identify and reduce barriers and gaps, and to help lower dropout rates among girls involved in physical activity and sports. – James Kon

Chair of the ANOC Gender Equity Commission and Chair of the Peace and Sport Standing Committee of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) His Royal Highness Prince Feisal Al-Hussein emphasised that gender equity is a fundamental necessity for the progress of sports and society as a whole.
His Royal Highness Prince Feisal made the remarks during the opening ceremony of the 2nd OCA Gender Equity Seminar, where he also noted that despite recent progress and achievements through collective action, there remains a need to stay resolute, as significant challenges persist across Asia and globally. He highlighted that women continue to face barriers that hinder their full participation and leadership in sports.
Organised by the OCA and hosted in the Sultanate, the two-day seminar which commenced yesterday, concludes today at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom, The Empire Brunei.
Held under the theme ‘Watch Her Shine’, the seminar aims to empower and promote gender equity in sports across Asia.

“In Asia,” His Royal Highness Prince Feisal continued, “we must recognise that we lag behind other continents in gender equity. We know that we face challenges, but we cannot let these challenges become excuses. As the world’s largest continent, home to more than 60 per cent of the world’s population, we have the duty not just to close the gap, but to inspire and lead the way in gender equity in sport.”
The opening ceremony also featured the presentation of the 2024 International Olympic Committee (IOC) Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (GEDI) Champions Award for Asia to Saudi Arabian taekwondo exponent Dunya Abutaleb, followed by the presentation of the OCA Gender Equity Committee (2024–2027) Road Map by Valerie Tarazi OLY.
The seminar continued with a session titled ‘Breaking Barriers: Advancing Gender Equity at All Sports Levels’ by three panellists – Leader of the GEDI Promotion Team of Tokyo 2020 Mikako Kotani, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women Referee Manager Pannipar Kammueng and former national artistic gymnast and Mental Health Ambassador Farah Ann OLY. This was followed by a presentation from the IOC–GEDI Department by IOC GEDI Manager Pedro Dias.
Presentations were also delivered by four additional panellists on ‘A Girl is Bound by Forty Ties’ by Project Manager of the National Olympic Council (NOC) of Kyrgyzstan Nargiza Bakeeva; ‘Key Achievements of IR Iran NOC Women and Sport Commission’ by International Affairs Expert of NOC Iran Hadis Shokouhi; ‘Champions for Change: How Jordan is Elevating Women in Sport’ by Secretary General of NOC Jordan Rana Saeed; and ‘Women in Sports Strategic Plan’ by Female Athlete Commission of NOC Brunei Pengiran Siti Amal Jariah binti Pengiran Haji Matjinen.

These individuals shared insights and experiences on advancing gender equity in sports, underscoring the OCA’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive sporting environment for women.
The workshops employed a comprehensive methodology designed to maximise learning, engagement, and practical outcomes.
They included a series of expert-led presentations providing foundational knowledge and strategic perspectives on gender equity issues in sports.
Following the presentations, a panel discussion featuring prominent leaders and stakeholders in gender equity enabled participants to share diverse perspectives and experiences. The inaugural OCA Gender Equity Seminar, held in Manama, Bahrain, in 2022, laid the foundation for future discussions on gender equity in sports.
Building upon that foundation, the current seminar offers a rich and engaging platform for participants to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaborative efforts aimed at expanding opportunities for women in sports throughout Asia. – James Kon
A 39-year-old unemployed man was sentenced to eight months’ jail on Saturday after admitting to causing damage to property at the parking lot of Jame’ ‘Asr Cemetery, Kampong Kiarong.
Muhammad Izzat bin Haji Said pleaded guilty on April 8, to a charge of mischief under Section 426 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
The incident took place on the afternoon of April 3, between 3.27pm and 6pm, when Muhammad Izzat overturned six tables and smashed 40 bottles of air asah-asahan – often sold near cemeteries – causing an estimated loss of BND178.
According to Prosecutor Syafina binti Abdul Hadzid, the defendant aggressively overturned the tables and hurled the bottles onto the ground. He fled the scene when the owners confronted him and threatened to call the police.
A chase ensued, and Muhammad Izzat was apprehended by one of the owners with help from a member of the public at a roundabout in Kampong Kiulap. The defendant later admitted to police that he had intentionally caused the damage.
He also has a previous conviction involving property offences. Magistrate Muhammad Qamarul Affyian binti Abdul Rahman earlier took a starting point of 12-months’ jail sentence, but reduced it to eight months in light of the guilty plea. – Fadley Faisal
