Food marketing to children plays a role in their everyday diet as it influences their food choice, demand, purchase and consumption. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), irresponsible marketing of food and beverages contributes to childhood obesity.
Medical Officer Dr Hajah Norol Ehsan binti Haji Abdul Hamid said this during a briefing on the Code on Responsible Marketing of Food and Beverages to Children in Brunei Darussalam (CoRM) yesterday.
Some 22 local social media influencers attended the event.
The Ministry of Health (MoH) through the Health Promotion Centre hosted the briefing to engage with social media influencers on contributing towards creating a healthier food environment in the Sultanate.
Results from health screening programmes carried out by the School Health Services showed that 25.9 per cent of Years 1, 4 and 6 students were overweight or obese.
A survey conducted by the MoH in 2020 revealed that the majority of the food and beverages advertised to children in Brunei were unhealthy.
The survey also found that social media is the most popular platform used for advertisement of food and beverages in the country.
As of January this year, 94.4 per cent of people in Brunei were social media users, as per the Digital 2023: Brunei Darussalam Report from DataReportal.
Health Education Officer Wan Siti Suhana Syazwani binti Abdullah Suhaimi said that preliminary results on a study on food and beverages marketing show that the top three platforms seen or heard by parents for unhealthy food and beverage advertising are social media, billboards and radio commercials. For children, the top three platforms are social media, celebrities and posters or banners.
Meanwhile, the main types of foods and beverages advertised to children in the last month were fast food, carbonated drinks, ice cream and frozen desserts and milkshakes.
Wan Siti Suhana Syazwani said, “The establishment of the CoRM is to control the advertisement of food and beverages on all platforms including social media, targeting food and beverages companies and advertising companies, including social media influencers.“
She added, “The CoRM aims to reduce the impact of unhealthy marketing of food and beverages, to ensure responsible marketing of food and beverages, and to provide useful resources and reference.”
Social media influencers, she said, can contribute “by applying the CoRM to your posts and reviews, encouraging and advising your clients to apply to us for approval before advertisements, informing your clients regarding CoRM as well as including healthy messages in your social media posts and videos, promoting healthier choice logo and collaborating with us on activities that promote healthy eating and healthy lifestyles”.
Health Education Officer Rusydiah Haji Sudin added, “People are more likely to ‘like’, ‘comment’ and ’share’ unhealthy, calorie dense foods on social media.
“Children and adolescents have viewed marketing for food more than 150 times per week on social media, with fast food and sugary drinks being the most common.”
She said, “The power is in your hands to motivate the public to adopt healthier and more sustainable eating habits as well as create and post content that engages with people, encouraging them to digest science-based messages and inspire them to change how they consume food.”
It is hoped that following the session, local social media influencers will have a better understanding of their role in contributing towards creating a healthier food environment in the country, and support the MoH’s vision of ‘Together Towards a Healthy Nation’ and uphold Brunei Vision 2035 of ensuring better quality of lives for the people in the Sultanate. – James Kon

Brunei Darussalam needs an organically-grown talent pool of people in cybersecurity. The country, the industry and the critical information infrastructure need more people well-versed and well-trained in cybersecurity to drive digital transformation, said Information Technology Protective Security Services (ITPSS) Sdn Bhd’s CEO Shamsul Bahri Hj Kamis during the prize presentation for the eighth Cyber Battle competition yesterday.
The sovereign status of any nation, which Brunei is not exempt from, extends well beyond the physical borders. This poses many challenges in terms of technical capacities and expertise as well as governance and legislative frameworks needed to ensure a safe, secure and trustworthy cyberspace.
As cybersecurity transcends borders, the need for a more practical and continuous collaboration with other countries demands more commitments from various stakeholders.
“I believe that industry and community players play a significant role in this endeavour. That is why ITPSS had been supportive with the setting up of a full-pledged Cybersecurity Association, namely, Brunei Cyber Security Association (BCSA). Through this association, it is hoped that budding cybersecurity communities in schools and other educational institutions can grow and flourish to ensure a steady supply of work-ready future cybersecurity workforce and professionals,” said Shamsul Bahri Hj Kamis.
“ITPSS is more than happy to play a supporting role through its cyber skills and growth initiative. Cyber Battle: Capture The Flag is one of the regular programme under this initiative and it is our pledge to continuously make it better and more inclusive in the future. Our current effort also reflects on the progress and development in the region as far as skills development in cybersecurity is concerned and is currently taking place in the form of ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Capacity Building Centre (AJCCBC) in Bangkok, Thailand and ASEAN Singapore Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence (ASCCE).
“It is hoped that a sustainable local cybersecurity ecosystem can be developed through a more collaborative exercise between industry and community players in Brunei. Not only would this contribute to a safer and trusted cyberspace, it would also contribute to the economic growth of the country and the prosperity of its people,” he added.
Team Ok I Try was the champion of the eighth Cyber Battle competition walking away with a cash prize of BND3,500. It also won two bonus prizes of BND300 each for completing packet analysis and digital forensics categories. Team Ok I Try comprised Mohammad Izdihar Sulaiman, Siti Noora’zam binti Haji Abdul Kadir and Chan Sin Yee @ Sydney.
The second place went to Team 3 Fishies winning BND2,500 while in third place was Team Onion bringing home BND1,500.
Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Economy) Dato Seri Paduka Haji Khairuddin bin Haji Abdul Hamid presented prizes to the winners in his capacity as a member of the Board of Directors of ITPSS.
Running concurrently with the competition was Talks at Cyber Battle featuring a series of presentations by security experts aimed at inspiring local youth to consider cybersecurity as a career choice.
Among the presenters was SANS Institute Technical Director for Asia Pacific Delaney Ng presenting ‘Ransomware for Incident Responders’. Other presentations included ‘Other Defence Against Black Hats’, ‘Islamic Views on Digital/Cyber Security’, ‘Making My Own JARVIS’ and ‘How To Get Started in Pentesting’. – James Kon
Reflecting on the statistics recorded by the World Health Organization (WHO), where there is a 1-in-300 chance of a patient being harmed during healthcare in hospitals across the world, Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar said patient’s safety is a serious global public health concern.
Speaking during the World Patient Safety Day celebration at Suri Seri Begawan Hospital, Belait District yesterday, Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham said the challenge in patient safety can be attributed to manpower.
“The issue of manpower causes burnout among health professionals, which contributes to the risk of patient safety. However, in addition to obtaining sufficient healthcare personnel, the focus should also be on improving the healthcare system as a whole by identifying the potential cause of an incident.”
The minister said the Ministry of Health (MoH) has always prioritised patient safety in line with its Strategic Plan 2019-2023 of strengthening the safety and quality of patient care.
“The goal underlines the need to ensure a safety culture and strengthen the quality of the management system at the ministerial level. Thus, the MoH has introduced various initiatives, such as an online incident reporting system, international patient safety goals and other policies to improve quality and patient safety.”
At the beginning of the year, the ministry introduced the Serious Reportable Events (SRE) policy, to mandate report being made on avoidable incidents in light of the availability of preventive measures.
He added, “The MoH launched the MOHCares application this year as another platform for patients to provide feedback and suggestions for improvement to services at the ministry.”
In terms of the International Patient Safety Goals (IPSG), which include correct patient identification, effective communication, management of high-alert medication, safe surgery, hand hygiene and fall prevention, the minister said the ministry has implemented four policies to support the goals to reduce the likelihood of patient injury in hospitals.
“When it comes to fall prevention, the WHO data shows that two per cent of hospitalised patients fall at least once, with one in four resulting in a life-threatening injury,” he remarked.
To address this issue, the minister said a fall prevention policy has been introduced to serve as a guideline, including identifying patients who have a high risk of falling and using clinical judgement to mitigate the risk.
The minister also shared that the MoH is actively improving the quality of service by conducting customer service training programmes with priority given to hospital staff.
“Among the modules are: understanding customer service culture; learning customer interaction skills; handling complaints; work ethics; confidentiality act; counter service; work etiquette and customer handling,” he added.
Meanwhile, Head of the Quality and Patient Safety Unit at Suri Seri Begawan Hospital Dr Chong Chean Leung said, “As healthcare workers, we strive to provide proper care and treatment to our patients. Therefore, we must listen and understand the needs of our patients.” Dr Chong said the theme for this year’s World Patient Safety Day aims to increase awareness among patients and their families on their safety during treatment. “The patient’s well-being is of the utmost importance in healthcare. To provide a holistic service, healthcare professionals need to be directly involved with the patients and their families, which is in line with the hospital’s aspirations,” he said. The event saw the minister officiate the occasion by showcasing a video on World Patient Safety Day, followed by the handing of the policy document, IPSG six – Fall Prevention, to medical officers of various departments. The minister also toured the various booths set by the medical officers and healthcare workers, highlighting the various risks that can affect the well-being and the steps taken to mitigate the risks.
Legislative Council members Yang Berhormat Haji Mohd Salleh bin Haji Othman, as Penghulu of Mukim Bukit Sawat, and Yang Berhormat Mohammad bin Abdullah @ Lim Swee Ann as Village Head of Kampong Bukit Sawat; Acting Chief Executive Officer Level I and event chairman Mohamad Alikhan bin Haji Mohd Yakop; Permanent Secretary at the MoH Haji Maswadi bin Haji Mohsin were also present. – Daniel Lim
