Polishing poetry skills of youth

The Brunei History Centre (PSB) in collaboration with the Malay Islamic Monarchy Supreme Council (MTMIB) Secretariat Office organised a Poetry Workshop on Brunei History for 2023 which concludes today.

The opening ceremony was held at the History Gallery, PSB yesterday.

The workshop saw the participation of 21 youth who will compete in the 2023 Brunei History Poetry Competition.

The workshop’s objective is to expose and appreciate the works of historical national poets.

It is to provide a space and opportunity for enthusiasts and youth to learn skills and expand knowledge on poetry techniques.

Principal of the PSB Dr Haji Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong was the special guest.

Disaster victims receive BND30,350 in aid

Seventeen families impacted by disasters received a combined total of BND30,350 in financial aid from the government during a ceremony at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports yesterday.

The families were impacted by fire, flooding, strong winds or had their homes collapsed or deemed unsafe for occupation, according to the Community Development Department (JAPEM).

Four families were affected by floods, six by fire, three from collapsed or condemned homes and four by strong winds.

No one was reported injured during the incidents, said JAPEM.

BND3,000 raised for orphans

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) handed over BND3,000 for orphans to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports yesterday.

The donation came from proceeds collected during the UBD Run event held on October 15, celebrating graduates of the 35th UBD Convocation and the new August intake.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad received the donation from UBD Vice-Chancellor Dr Hazri bin Haji Kifle.

Boost for shipping industry

Participating vendors in the Brunei Gas Carriers’ (BGC) In-Country Value (ICV) Ignite capacity development programme were feted at a ceremony at J Hotel, Kiulap yesterday.

A total of 17 vendors participated in the programme, with 14 completing the three-day ‘BAH! & Gol’ Capability Training.

The graduation marks a significant milestone in their journey toward enhancing their capabilities in the maritime and shipping industry, said BGC, the organisers of the programme.

The ICV Ignite was first launched on March 7, 2023 and aimed to provide support to local businesses in building capability within the shipping ecosystem.

“I am happy to announce that we, at BGC, witnessed a high degree of professionalism and eagerness from all programme participants to learn and gain awareness and insights on our maritime and shipping ecosystem,” said BGC Contracts and Procurement Manager, Pengiran Dianawaty binti Pengiran Matzin.

ASEAN defence ministers adopt joint declaration

The 17th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) held at the Jakarta Convention Centre in Jakarta, Indonesia yesterday, adopted a joint declaration titled the ‘Jakarta Joint Declaration by the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting on Peace, Prosperity and Security’.

Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof led the Sultanate’s delegation.

The Bruneian delegation included Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Brigadier General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Alirupendi bin Haji Perudin.

Themed ’Peace, Prosperity and Security’, the 17th ADMM observed the adoption of several deliverables including two concept papers, the notation of one discussion paper, and the approval of a revised standard operating procedure (SOP).

The Sultanate had the opportunity to brief the meeting on the ongoing drafting progress and development of the A Future-Ready ADMM and ADMM-Plus: A Strategy Paper, during which the country shared the outcomes of its second workshop held in Bandar Seri Begawan in October 2023. Indonesia’s Minister of Defence Prabowo Subianto chaired the meeting.

A significant development was also achieved for this year’s ADMM with the inaugural participation of Timor-Leste as an observer to the ADMM and its related meetings.

On the sidelines of the 17th ADMM, the ASEAN-United States Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting was convened and co-chaired by Prabowo Subianto and United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd J Austin III.

This was followed by the ASEAN-Japan Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting convened on a hybrid platform and co-chaired by Prabowo Subianto and Japanese Minister of Defence Minoru Kihara.

Brunei Darussalam also held bilateral meetings with Indonesia, Russia and the ASEAN Secretariat. Indonesia as ADMM Chair, will also host the 10th ADMM-Plus today.

Brunei to have own national observation station in five years

The Sultanate will have its own national astronomy observation station within five years that will complement institutions for educational purposes, Acting Surveyor General Dayangku Siti Saihalina binti Pengiran Haji Ibrahim said.

She outlined the Survey Department’s achievements and future plans at the opening ceremony of the Geographic Information System (GIS) Day celebration yesterday.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary (Planning, Land Use and Environment) at the Ministry of Development (MoD) Dr Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak called for the Survey Department to continue its progress and explore technological potential to address the challenges faced by the department and provide more efficient and systematic geospatial information and services.

Some 166 participants from all agencies attended the briefing organised by the Survey Department held at the Indera Pahlawan Hall, MoD’s Training Centre. This year’s GIS Day theme is ‘Celebrating the GIS Professional’.

The event also saw briefing sessions on available services at the Survey Department. Acting Assistant Surveyor General and Head of Geospatial Technology Hajah Nurani binti Haji Ahmad delivered the briefing on the Survey Department’s Online applications, while Geospatial Technology Division Acting Surveyor Sambri bin Haji Daud delivered a briefing on the Geoportal Ukur application.

Astronomy Unit Surveyor Haji Khairul Abidin bin Haji Sulaiman spoke on Qiblat Direction application while Geospatial Mapping Services Unit Surveyor Sariawati binti Alwi presented on Address application and Claim on Damages of Government Assets.

The use of handheld GPS was explained by Geodetic Unit Surveyor Muhammad Abdul Hadi bin Haseri and Application for Survey Works session was delivered by Land Surveying Unit Surveyor Pengiran Mohd Norhashimi bin Pengiran Haji Bungsu.

The GIS Day 2023 celebration will continue during Bandarku Ceria on Sunday. Various activities and exhibitions will be showcased at Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas. – James Kon

Care for Palestine at Sumbangsih Mulia

Brunei Darussalam Association of Writers (Asterawani), Putra Seni Group with the support of the Language and Literature Bureau as well as Sumbangsih Mulia in Beribi held an event dubbed ‘Peduli Palestin’ or Care for Palestine yesterday.

Chairman of Sumbangsih Mulia Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin was the guest of honour.

The ceremony saw a poetry recital by literature experts and selling of books, magazines and used items with proceeds wholly donated to the Humanitarian Fund for Palestinians in Gaza 2023. Patrons at Sumbangsih Mulia which is a place for vendors to sell their products such as food, drinks and local traditional crafts, have the chance to donate in lessening the burden of Palestinians.

Sumbangsih Mulia was built in 2007 to accommodate vendors who used to operate along roadsides.

The building provides extra comfort for vendors to conduct business. The vendors are grateful to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. – Azlan Othman

School marks 10 years with open day

Belait Arabic School hosted an open day themed ‘Innovation Centre: Innovation towards Excellence’ to celebrate a decade of relocating to its current building.

Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Religious) at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Haji Abdul Rajid bin Haji Mohd Salleh, guest of honour, was welcomed by Belait Arabic School Acting Headmistress Pengiran Hajah Masniah @Nur Amalina binti Pengiran Hussin.

In her welcoming speech, Pengiran Hajah Masniah @ Nur Amalina recalled the school’s history and the achievements made over the past 10 years. The event also featured the launch of a new e-Book titled Hariku Bercalakkan Sunnah and exhibition showcasing the school’s history.

A number of activities and games were set up within the school premises featuring a variety of subjects from Arabic Language to Science and Technology. The day also saw stalls taken up by local vendors and entrepreneurs. – Daniel Lim

Career day fuels students’ aspirations

The Career Unit of Pengiran Isteri Hajjah Mariam Serasa Secondary School organised the ‘Passport to Your Future: Youth Career Day’ recently.

Students were encouraged to dress up in attire representing their future profession.

The event featured career talks by guests from local startups and representatives from the Ministry of Health, Royal Brunei Police Force, Prisons Department, and Fire and Rescue Department.

The objective was to provide early exposure, enabling students to plan and contemplate their future career paths.

Workshop enhances students’ career readiness

Some 41 students of Sayyidina Husain Secondary School attended a workshop on curriculum vitae (CV) writing and interview tips, organised by the Career Education Unit at the school’s ICT Laboratory.

The workshop focused on CV writing and interview tips to equip students with the skills for crafting compelling CVs. Marketing Manager at Cosmopolitan College of Commerce and Technology Nur Hidayatul binti Jefri facilitated the workshop covering the dos and don’ts of CV writing, common mistakes and interview preparation.

Through role-playing scenarios, students gained practical insights, acquiring skills for their future endeavours post ‘O’ Level.
