Grand advantage

ANN/THE STAR – While there is a wealth of knowledge regarding parenting and its influence on children’s development and well-being, the same cannot be said for grandparents.

Despite their active involvement in caring for children, there has been a notable gap in research and exploration of their impact.

Why an article on grandparents? Partly because we live in a rapidly ageing society. Our lifespan has increased significantly, contributing to growing populations of elderly people.

So children are more likely to grow up having grandparents around longer than before.

Domestic arrangements may also involve grandparents, especially in families burdened by cost of living. Urban societies are seeing both parents working to make ends meet, leaving their children in the care of grandparents where available.

Some grandparents still financially support their own children who are young parents. It may also be more expensive to leave the family home, so three generations may live in the same household.

It can be useful to know what scientific literature says about the influence of grandparents, especially in their role as secondary caregiver, or even main caregiver. Such information could help us navigate how we foster the upbringing of children as they grow into adults, with grandparents in the picture.

MIXED FINDINGS

So what do we know about grandparents with regards to children’s development? Overall, there are mixed findings on the advantage of having grandparents as caregivers.

For the most part, review studies have suggested that involvement of grandparents contribute to better physical development and socio-emotional well-being, with some even pointing to improved educational attainment and better communication skills.

However, global statistics do not favour children being cared for primarily by grandparents.

Recent studies found evidence of poorer developmental milestones, emotional well-being and school performance in children whose main caregivers are their grandparents.

Perhaps due to their age and their relationship with their grandchildren, grandparents are often less meticulous and more permissive than parents. Grandparents also often pamper their grandchildren, which may prevent kids from developing skills like resilience and self-confidence.

The findings, therefore, imply that parents are still very significant caregivers for their own children’s development and well-being.

How children’s development benefit from their grandparents depends of various factors.

Some factors could be detrimental such as poor health of grandparents, poor quality of connection with grandparents, existing conflicts between parents and grandparents, as well as anything else that adds to family stress.

SUPPORTIVE ROLE

Nevertheless, when grandparents are healthy, foster strong connection with grandchildren and are in good terms with their own children, they can play a supportive role as secondary caregivers that can benefit children and the family. They come in the forms of additional emotional comfort, as advisors to parents and even as financial resource for both parents and children.

In the temporary absence of parents while they are at work, grandparents can provide a continued sense of belonging and emotional support. Some research have shown that children and teenagers who bond well with grandparents have improved emotional well-being, with lower likelihood of depressive tendencies.

Grandparents can also be good sources of cognitive stimulation for children, as well as support for parents in consistent disciplining. In cases involving children with disabilities, grandparents can provide a very important support as co-parents to provide the much-needed caregiving respite to parents.

Grandparents who bond with children as early as their birth and nurture them as they grow up are more likely to receive care from their grandchildren when they are older.

This provides opportunities for children and teenagers to learn about issues of the elderly and be better prepared when they become adult caregivers to their own parents.

LEVERAGE ON ROLES

Either way, grandparents do have impact on children’s development. What is important is for us to leverage on the roles that grandparents play to contribute towards healthier development of children towards resilience and being valuable members of society.

Grandparents can provide support to parents in terms of basic caregiving as well as to encourage adaptive behaviour skills development, cognitive stimulation and emotional regulation in children.

Given the importance of grandparents’ roles in child development and well-being, it would be good for stakeholders of family development such as healthcare professionals, educators and social workers to consider integrating them as part of any systemic planning.

Efforts to improve ties between grandparents and children could promote mutual well-being where both can benefit from a sense of connectedness and social support.

However, we still need more research on the impact of grandparents in child and family development, especially within the Southeast Asian region where such studies are few and far between.

I would like to implore social science researchers to consider including grandparents as a relevant factor in their studies so that we can better grow as a community that is informed by updated evidence. – Dr Alvin Ng Lai Oon

Woman dies after being stabbed in random attack

RUSTON (AP) – One of four women stabbed in what officials said was a random attack on a Louisiana college campus died yesterday, the school announced.

Annie Richardson had been in critical condition after Monday’s attack and she died of her injuries yesterday, according to a statement from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, United States.

Two other women were hospitalised and a fourth woman who is a retired teacher was cut but declined treatment in what officials say was a random knife attack outside a recreation centre on the northern Louisiana campus. Richardson was stabbed as she left an exercise class.

One of the hospitalised victims was in serious condition and the other was recovering and could be released early, according to an earlier e-mail from the university.

The suspect, Jacoby Johnson, 23, was detained minutes after the attack. He will now face a charge of second-degree murder, the university said, in addition to charges of attempted murder.

Timberwolves beat Warriors 104-101

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – When the NBA created the In-Season Tournament as a way to inject playoff-level intensity into regular-season games, the scuffle between the Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves that resulted in three early ejections yesterday may not have been what the league had in mind.

With the game still scoreless and not yet two minutes old, Golden State’s Draymond Green was ejected after putting Minnesota’s Rudy Gobert in a headlock. Warriors guard Klay Thompson and Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels, who got into a shoving match that resulted in Thompson’s jersey being ripped, were also tossed.

Once the dust settled, Karl-Anthony Towns scored 33 points, sending Minnesota to a 104-101 tournament victory over Golden State. The Wolves have won seven straight games for their longest win streak since 2004.

“We just found a way to win ugly in a game that was pretty ugly,” Minnesota coach Chris Finch said. “All credit to (the Warriors), those guys, they were super physical and took us out of our rhythm. But we found a way to win it and showed some toughness mentally.”

The rematch of the Wolves’ 116-110 win at the Chase Center on Monday was not lacking in intensity as the lead changed hands several times in the fourth quarter, until Towns gave Minnesota the lead for good with a three-pointer with 1:07 remaining.

Towns also grabbed 11 boards, and Gobert had 13. Reigning Western Conference player of the week Anthony Edwards scored 20 points.

“I just saw some moments to make some shots. I’m glad I did,” Towns said. “My teammates put me in great positions. Mike (Conley) finished the game out. It was just a team win, a great win. (Edwards) made some big shots when we needed him, Rudy got some big rebounds and we could keep going down the list.”

Golden State was without leading scorer Stephen Curry, who was ruled out with right knee soreness. Coach Steve Kerr said an MRI revealed “nothing alarming”, and the star guard is considered day to day.

Nuggets win 111-108 to keep Clippers winless with James Harden

DENVER (AP) – Nikola Jokic had 32 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists, and the Denver Nuggets beat Los Angeles 111-108 in an NBA In-Season Tournament game yesterday, keeping the Clippers winless since acquiring James Harden last month.

Jokic was perfect on 14 free throw attempts, including two with 13 seconds left that helped the Nuggets hold off the Clippers’ comeback try.

Los Angeles has lost five straight with Harden, who was acquired on October 30, and six in a row overall despite the 34-year-old guard’s best game with his new team since arriving from Philadelphia.

“I kept reiterating, I didn’t have a training camp or a preseason, so kind of learning on the fly,” Harden said. “Also getting myself into James Harden shape. Tonight was definitely another step in the right direction and just keep improving.”

Harden scored 21 points and Paul George tied a season high with 35 points as Los Angeles fell to 0-2 in West Group B play.

“I thought we played great. It’s tough, the adversity of playing against the extra three,” George said of the officiating. “I thought they were awful but, the defending champs, we’ve got to play better.

“So many times I got hit on layups, three-pointers. It was constant. Jump shots, getting hit, smacked on the forearm. It was a poor job.”

UK inflation falls sharply, relieving pressure on prime minister

LONDON (AFP) – United Kingdom (UK) inflation fell more than expected in October, data showed yesterday, easing a cost-of-living crisis and relieving pressure on British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) hit a two-year low at 4.6 per cent, the Office of National Statistics said, dipping under a five-per cent target set by Sunak, who faces a crisis in his Conservative party ahead of next year’s general election.

CPI inflation slowed more than forecast by the Bank of England and analysts after reaching 6.7 per cent in September.

“Official figures… confirm we have halved inflation meeting the first of the five priorities I set out at the beginning of this year,” Sunak said.

“But while it is welcome news that prices are no longer rising as quickly, we know many people are continuing to struggle, which is why we must stay the course to continue to get inflation all the way back down to two percent,” he said, referring to the Bank of England’s (BoE) target.

UK annual inflation struck a 41-year peak at 11.1 per cent in October 2022, stoked by spiking energy prices after the invasion in Ukraine.

Chief economist at the ONS Grant Fitzner said “inflation fell substantially” last month on easing energy costs following last year’s steep rise.

“Food prices were little changed on the month, after rising this time last year, while hotel prices fell, both helping to push inflation to its lowest rate for two years,” he added.

Analysts said a sharp fall in the annual inflation rate could see Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt cut taxes in his latest budget announcement due next week.

They add that the drop in UK inflation since the start of the year from the highest level in decades is thanks largely to interest-rate hikes from the independent BoE and cooler energy prices worldwide.

Interest-rate hikes by other major central banks, including the US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank (ECB), have helped bring down elevated inflation in the world’s biggest economy and the eurozone.

Wembanyama, Holmgren have off nights in rookie showdown

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren appeared trying to avoid creating competition.

The much-anticipated first regular-season meeting between two of the NBA’s top rookies yesterday wasn’t much of a game, and apparently there isn’t much of a rivalry between the slender seven-footers.

Wembanyama said he wasn’t aware he was even being compared to Holmgren.

“Every prospect is compared to everyone,” the 19-year-old from France said.

They rarely matched up one-on-one yesterday, and both had off nights. Wembanyama finished with eight points on four-for-15 shooting, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked two shots in San Antonio’s 123-87 loss to Oklahoma City. Holmgren finished with nine points on three-for-10 shooting and had seven rebounds and three assists.

Wembanyama, the number one pick in this year’s draft, entered the night averaging 19.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks. Holmgren, the number two pick in the 2022 draft, missed last season due to a foot injury but has recovered in grand style.

AP – Lionel Messi and Luiz Suárez, close friends and former teammates at Barcelona, will renew their on-the-field rivalry tomorrow in World Cup qualifying.

Messi, who appears to have recovered from a muscle injury in his leg, led Argentina to their third World Cup title last year and has his team in first place in the South American qualifying group for the 2026 tournament. The 36-year-old Suárez has just returned to Uruguay’s national team as he nears the end of a high-scoring season in the Brazilian league.

The Argentines will take on two-time World Cup champion Uruguay at La Bombonera Stadium in Buenos Aires.

Also tomorrow, Brazil will travel to face Colombia in Barranquilla as they try to recover from a home draw with Venezuela and a loss at Uruguay in the previous two qualifying matches.

Brazil coach Fernando Diniz, who recently won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense, could use teenager Endrick after calling him up for the first time.

Argentina lead the 10-team South American qualifying group with 12 points from four matches. Uruguay, Brazil and Venezuela have seven points each and are separated by goal difference. Colombia has six points, while Ecuador, Paraguay and Chile have four each. Peru has one point and Bolivia has zero.

The next World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada will include 48 teams, meaning direct entry for the top six teams in South America. The seventh-place team will contest an intercontinental playoff for a berth.

Messi will likely be playing his last two matches of the calendar year against Uruguay and then Brazil next week at the Maracana Stadium.

DUBAI (AFP) – Dubai is forging ahead with plans to replace the world’s busiest airport with an even bigger one as passenger traffic recovers to outstrip pre-pandemic levels, a top official told AFP yesterday.

Dubai Airport’s Chief Executive Officer Paul Griffiths said designs were being drawn up for Al Maktoum International Airport, which will be built on the city’s outskirts and should replace Dubai International in the 2030s.

He was speaking at the Dubai Airshow in the United Arab Emirates, where airlines have invested heavily in new planes. Last year, neighbouring Saudi Arabia announced plans for a major new air hub in Riyadh.

“Once we’ve reached about 120 million (passengers a year), which is what we think our total capacity at DXB (Dubai International) is at the absolute maximum with everything optimised, we are going to need a new airport,” Griffiths said.

LONDON (AFP) – Jude Bellingham has been ruled out of England’s final Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, the Football Association announced on Tuesday.

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has also been withdrawn from Gareth Southgate’s squad, meaning five players are missing from the initial group announced for the match at Wembley on November 17 and the away fixture three days later.

Midfielder Bellingham, 20, who has scored 13 goals so far in a stunning debut season for Real Madrid, and Colwill both have shoulder issues.

“Jude Bellingham and Levi Colwill will play no part in England’s forthcoming UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia,” the FA said in a statement. “The pair arrived at St George’s Park for assessments on Monday but will now return to their clubs to continue their rehabilitation.”

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford and Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips will join the squad later this week “owing to personal matters”, the FA said.

PARIS (AFP) – French train maker Alstom announced plans yesterday to cut 1,500 jobs worldwide as the crisis-hit group seeks to slash its sizeable debt.

The move sent shares in the world’s number two rail company lower. Alstom posted last month a negative cash flow of EUR1.15 billion (USD1.25 billion) in the first half of its fiscal year, raising concerns about its financial health.

“The negative free cash flow of Alstom during this first half is a clear call for change,” Alstom Chief Executive Henri Poupart-Lafarge said in a statement.
