A strong turnout of 2,810 children aged between five and 11 were administered the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, bumping up the vaccination rate for this age bracket to 29,210 or 68.1 per cent.

Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar yesterday announced this at the daily press conference, where he was accompanied by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health Haji Maswadi bin Haji Mohsin.

Meanwhile, 1,294 children have received the second dose of the vaccine, bringing the total figure to 7,290 doses or 17 per cent.

Reminding parents to ensure their children turn up for the second dose after the wait-out period, the minister said, “The vaccine has proven to provide protection against the adverse effects of COVID-19. This includes multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), which can cause complications to a child’s recovery.”

He added that the coverage rate for the populace who have received the booster shot is 67.6 per cent.
