Each person has a responsibility to give back to the community, by reducing their carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices in everything they do.
This was said by Brunei Methanol Company Sdn Bhd (BMC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jesus Enrique Mora Marin during a tree planting event at the Berakas Forest Reserve, Biodiversity Park yesterday.
He said that global concerns on climate change have been on the rise due to extreme climate events becoming more likely and more intense, with more worldwide effort required to combat climate change.
“Here in Brunei, the risk of climate-related natural disasters is low, but the risk of climate transition continues,” he said.
“We stand united with a shared goal to create a sustainable and green future for generations to come. We can reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices, with one way being by planting trees.
“Let’s remember that our actions matter. What we do today is an investment for a better tomorrow, demonstrating our commitment to preserving Brunei for a brighter, greener and sustainable future.”
He added, “Combating climate change is not just about planting trees. It is a long-term collaborative effort with the government and our stakeholders to achieve a carbon neutral future by 2050. I believe we can make a difference, one step at a time.”
He also underlined BMC’s unwavering dedication to community enrichment and stressed the pressing need to reduce carbon footprints.
Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Economy) Dato Seri Paduka Haji Khairuddin bin Haji Abdul Hamid in his capacity as the BMC’s Deputy Chairman attended the event.
Also present were Ambassador of Japan to Brunei Darussalam Maeda Toru; BMC Board member Ahmad Fathi bin Dato Paduka Haji Junaidi and Acting Managing Director of Petroleum Authority of Brunei Darussalam Haji Kula bin Haji Metasan.
BMC planted 100 tree saplings during the event held in collaboration with Green Brunei aligning with the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy goal of planting 500,000 trees by 2035.
Meanwhile, Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd (BGC) held its first ‘Plant A Tree’ activity at Pentagon Park, Jalan Mentiri Besar Recreational Park yesterday, joined by Deputy Permanent Secretary (Transport) at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications Haji Mohammad Salihin bin Haji Aspar, organised to celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary and as part of BGC’s social investment initiative ‘Clean Rivers, Clean Seas’.
BGC Managing Director Captain Abdul Mateen Abdurrahman Liew said, “Our presence here reflects not only our dedication to preserving and enhancing our natural environment but also our commitment to global sustainable development goals.”
He added, “This year marks BGC’s first year organising a tree planting activity in collaboration with the Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam, a significant milestone to show our commitment to addressing adverse changing climate patterns to shape Brunei Darussalam into a low carbon and climate resilient nation.”
