Nurses, midwives play crucial role in breastfeeding education

Among the contributing factors of the decreasing rate of breastfeeding among working mothers are the lack of support in the workplace including insufficient flexibility of working hours, no suitable rooms or facilities as well as working environment.

This was underlined by the Acting Director of Health Service Pengiran Dr Hajah Siti Nasibah binti Pengiran Haji Ismail at the World Breastfeeding Week celebration at Berakas Health Centre yesterday.

The acting director noted the crucial roles of nurses and midwives in disseminating information on breastfeeding, both pre-and post-natal, and particularly after the mothers return to work.

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every August 1 to 7 by 170 countries and this year’s theme is ‘Enabling Breastfeeding: Making A Difference for Working Parents’.

The celebration was organised by the Community Nursing Services at the Department of Health Services, Ministry of Health (MoH).
