Non-halal products found in several supermarkets

Azlan Othman

Three food and drink products sold at several supermarkets in the Sultanate were found to contain non-halal ingredients, the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) said in a statement yesterday.

The products are: Blueberry Chilli Sauce from Blushing Blueberries containing white wine vinegar; Balsamic and Roasted Garlic Vinaigrette from Praise containing wine vinegar; and Chocolate Pralines from Excelcium Tradition containing amaretto.

The finding was made following an examination by the Syariah Affairs Department through the Halal Food Control Division following public complaints based on the information on the packaging.

To safeguard the Muslim community, the Syariah Affairs Department has ordered the premises to immediately move the products to the non-halal section.

Importers, supermarkets and shops are advised to immediately isolate these products if sold at their premises.

The MoRA advised owners, managers, retailers, suppliers and importers of products to the country to take steps in ensuring that non-halal products imported from overseas are not mixed with halal ones.

Those wishing to make a complaint or share information on the selling of non-halal products openly at business premises can contact the Syariah Affairs Department through the Halal Food Control Division at 7166222 or any of the Halal Food Control Division offices.
