Nearly 690kg waste collected in clean-up campaign

Nearly 690 kilogrammes (kg) of trash was collected during a river cleanup programme organised by the Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB) at Kampong Ayer.

The H2O Heroes: River Clean-Up initative, held in partnership with Green Brunei and in conjunction with World Environment Day, marked the first project under the Financial Industry Community (Komuniti Industri Kewangan) programme, which aims to strengthen collaboration between BDCB and financial institutions through corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities.

Around 150 participants, comprising representatives from 13 financial institutions in the country, local villagers and grassroots leaders as well as volunteers spent the day collecting trash from the river, pulling out some 685kg of garbage from the waterways.

The event aimed to encourage the financial industry to contribute to the national sustainability agenda through corporate sustainability initiatives, raise awareness on the environmental issues faced in Brunei Darussalam, and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 14 – Life below Water and SDG 15 – Life on Land.

Managing Director of BDCB Hajah Rokiah binti Haji Badar urged the financial industry to seize the opportunity to drive Financial Industry Community with innovative and impactful ideas and projects.

She emphasised the importance of creating initiatives that not only benefit the financial sector but also have a positive impact on society and the environment for the years to come and for the next generation. – Adib Noor
