A 42-year-old Malaysian man was fined BND7,000 by the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for possessing smuggled alcoholic drinks.
Khu Chee Young would have to serve six months’ jail in default of payment of the fines.
Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif heard from the Customs prosecutor that the offences were uncovered on December 4, at 8.03am, when customs officers at the Labu Control Post in Temburong stopped Khu’s vehicle for inspection and discovered 192 cans of alcoholic beverages, which had been brought into the country without proper authorisation.
Khu also failed to comply with a customs officer’s instructions by not stopping his vehicle for inspection.
The court further ordered the confiscation of all seized beverages, which will be handed over to the government for destruction. – Fadley Faisal
