MCYS addresses allegations of misconduct against football association official

The Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports (MCYS) has responded to allegations of inappropriate conduct involving a high-ranking official from the Brunei Darussalam Football Association (FABD), as reported by a foreign national in another country.

In a press statement, the MCYS expressed its serious stance on the matter, reiterating that harassment or inappropriate conduct of any kind will not be tolerated. The Ministry emphasised the importance of safeguarding athletes, officials, and individuals in the sports community from any form of harassment or abuse.

The Ministry referred to the 2007 International Olympic Committee (IOC) Consensus Statement, which asserts that everyone in sport shares the responsibility to prevent sexual harassment and abuse, while promoting a culture of dignity, respect, and safety in sports.

The MCYS reaffirmed the need for sports organisations to demonstrate strong leadership in identifying and eradicating such practices.

A police report has been lodged, and the Ministry is cooperating fully with the authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into the allegations. The MCYS also urged the public to refrain from circulating unverified information on social media, reminding them that such actions could constitute an offense under Section 34 of the Public Order Act, Chapter 148.

In accordance with the 2016 IOC Guidelines on safeguarding athletes from harassment and abuse, the MCYS assured that it will take firm disciplinary action and legal measures against any individual found guilty of misconduct.

The Ministry concluded by reaffirming its commitment to upholding accountability, integrity, and respect across all sports associations in Brunei Darussalam. It also reminded association officials to adhere strictly to rules and codes of conduct, particularly when representing the country, in order to maintain Brunei’s reputation on the international stage.

The FABD also released a statement, expressing that it views the allegations seriously, particularly concerning the spread of unverified information. FABD emphasised that the dissemination of false information is a serious crime and added that it stands shoulder to shoulder with MCYS in addressing the issue.

FABD has reported the matter to the relevant authorities and is cooperating fully in the ongoing investigation. The association also revealed that it has submitted the names of individuals allegedly spreading negativity about FABD officials, believing these individuals might have motives and could be involved in spreading fake news.

FABD concluded by stating that it will not release any further details as the investigation is still ongoing. – JAMES KON
