Man pleads guilty to theft, sentenced six weeks’ jail

The Magistrate’s Court sentenced local man Mohammad Ilmee bin Haji Awang Ani, 38, to six weeks’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to theft charges yesterday.

Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif handed down the sentence following submissions by Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Abdul Musawwir bin Haji Mahli, who revealed the facts of the case.

According to DPP Musawwir, the defendant, a married father of two and employed as a storekeeper, committed the theft on November 19, at an unoccupied house in Kampong Delima Satu, Jalan Muara. The stolen items included a steel sink, two dark chocolate window frames and two aluminium window frames.

The court heard that the owner visited her old house with her husband and discovered missing windows and a ransacked interior. The next day, she received CCTV footage from her sister showing a car parked at the property and the defendant loading items into the vehicle. This prompted her to file a police report.

Subsequent police investigations led to the defendant’s arrest, during which he admitted to the theft. The defendant explained that he initially parked his vehicle at a nearby shop and approached the house on foot to ensure it was unoccupied. He then drove to the house, entered via the first floor, and dismantled the window frames and a kitchen sink.

The stolen items were thrown out the window before being loaded into his car and sold to a scrap metal yard for BND22, which the defendant used for personal expenses.

Police were unable to recover the stolen items. The court also noted that the defendant had no prior convictions. – Fadley Faisal
