Malaysian mall slide takes a leap of faith

JOHOR (ANN/THE STRAITS TIMES) – We’ve all heard of cruises to nowhere, but how about a slide that ends… mid-air? In Malaysia, a shopping mall has made headlines with a daring new attraction—a slide that comes to an abrupt halt about 6 metres above ground.

A viral TikTok video by user faizal_danial captures the fibreglass slide, starting from the fifth floor of Paradigm Mall in Johor Bahru, leaving viewers both intrigued and baffled.

The structure snakes down almost vertically and abruptly terminates between the second and third floors.

Anyone riding the slide will likely crash into a llaollao kiosk below.

A man can be seen in the video looking befuddled as he seems to calculate in his head the speed and trajectory of anyone slip-sliding on the slide.

It has, naturally, become the day’s focal point of kibitzing and gallows humour.

“After taking this slide, (riders) must immediately answer to Munkar and Nakir,” one TikTok commenter remarked. Munkar and Nakir are angels in Islamic eschatology, who test the faith of the dead in their graves.

“You take this slide and you end up a Power Ranger,” says another commenter.

Another said the slide was one sure way to beat the queues at llaollao.

According to various Malaysian websites, the slide is, in fact, a part of an indoor adventure playground being built by amusement ride and entertainment firm Escape.

The JB branch will be the company’s fourth outlet after the ones in Penang, Petaling Jaya and Ipoh.

Online pictures and videos of the Petaling Jaya branch of Escape show a similar slide, with a giant air cushion at its end.

But, for now, the slide is seemingly a highway from Paradigm to paradise.
