Universiti Teknologi Brunei’s (UTB) peatland forest fire monitoring alert system was chosen as a first prize winner in the innovation track of the Huawei ICT Competition 2023-2024 Global Finals in Shenzhen China.
According to the university, the system integrates remote sensing devices with real-time data collection techniques to measure and monitor parameters such as water level, carbon emissions, soil temperature, soil humidity and weather conditions.
“By leveraging IoT, machine learning and cloud technology, the system provides early warnings of potential peat fire outbreaks or ecosystem degradation, enabling immediate action from stakeholders,” said UTB.
The university said the system’s dashboard offers precise monitoring and visualisation tools to facilitate comprehensive understanding and informed decision-making regarding peatland conservation and management strategies.
“The outstanding achievement by UTB’s Team CIE showcases the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and technological excellence, positioning Brunei Darussalam as a leader in cutting edge research and development,” said UTB.
UTB’s Team CIE was supervised by Dr Wida Susanty binti Suhaili and Dr Thein Wan and comprised Master of Science by Research students Md Daniel bin Haji Abdullah, Siti Rasyidah binti Haji Ismail and Md Musyaffa bin Abdul Aziz.
The competition saw over 170,000 students from more than 2,000 colleges and universities across 80 countries participate.
Meanwhile, UTB students Jaicquailina Vanessa anak Ujai and Abdul Hannan As’ari bin Haji Abdul Khalid As’ari secured third place in the highly competitive 2024 Guangxi-ASEAN Vocational Skills Competition of Water Quality Testing for University and Vocational College Students.
The competition was hosted by Guangxi Polytechnic of Construction (GXPC) and is part of the Clean Water Action: China-ASEAN Youth Envoys Programme.
The programme aimed at enhancing environmental protection and leadership skills among young people in China and ASEAN countries.
UTB lecturer Dr Sharina Yunus said, “Despite their busy schedule with final year projects and final year exams, Jaicquailina and Abdul Hannan put in a commendable effort. Their dedication and hard work are truly admirable.”
