Labour inspections unearth 13 offences

Failing to provide a rest day, excessive working hours and abusing foreign workers licences were among the 13 offences recorded when labour enforcement officers conducted inspections in Kampong Telisai and Kampong Sabun recently.

The Law Enforcement Division, Kuala Belait Branch Labour Department conducted Operasi Kelinga 189/2023 in Kampong Telisai aimed at ensuring employers abide by the Employment Order 2009.

The first inspection found three offences by an employer – not providing a service contract, excessive working hours and violating the conditions of the recruitment licence for foreign workers by assigning labourers to work as cashiers.

The second inspection uncovered the same three offences.

Meanwhile, during an operation in Kampong Sabun, offences recorded included not providing a service contract, failing to provide a rest day, and for failing to provide first aid equipment.

The second inspection found three offences committed by the employer, namely failing to provide first aid equipment, employing foreign workers without a valid licence and violating the licence conditions, by having workers employed as conductors do administrative work. If convicted, the employer may be subject to a fine of BND600 for the first offence and BND900 for the second offence.

For the third offence or the failure to settle the fine, the employer will be brought to court.

The Labour Department also reminded employers to ensure workers’ welfare as stated in the requirements of the Employment Order 2009, such as the preparation of employment contracts and payment of wages on time.

Employers are also warned against misusing the foreign worker license and violating the Act under the Employment Order 2009. – Azlan Othman
