A lively and fun performance by Mukun Selendang Sutera Brunei, a Mukun group, entertained the crowd at the Brunei History Race Challenge including Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad.

The group’s President Irwan Rino bin Nordin said the group was honoured by the invitation to showcase their skills to the minister and senior officials at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS). The group recently represented Brunei Darussalam at the Festival Gendang Melayu Sarawak organised by the Sarawak’s National Department for Culture and Arts in Kuching, Sarawak.

After not being able to compete in the past two years due to COVID-19, the group initially declined to compete in this year’s event.

However, under the ministry’s initiative and with a little preparation and training, they participated in the eighth edition of the competition, which was the fifth for Mukun Selendang Sutera Brunei. Sharing on their recent participation in the Kuching competition, Irwan said despite the lack of training and preparation, and the change in competition format, the group was able to make the top three in the Group Category, and is now looking forward to participating in the competition again.

“We also had the honour of having Consul General at the Brunei Darussalam Consulate in Kuching Noni Zurainah binti Haji Ismi witness our participation,” he said.
