Karate skills on full display

More than 80 karate athletes showcased discipline and sportsmanship as they competed in a series of matches held as part of the Brunei Shell Recreation Club (BSRC) Wadokai Karate Tournament 2024.

Wan Azlee Khairi bin Wan Zuraimi was named the best of the best for male kumite for ages nine to 11, while Aura Raihanna Danish binti Mohd Shahrel and Awangku Mohd Abdul Qawi bin Pengiran Haji Zainal both were the best of the best in female kumite for 12 to 15 years old, and kumite for Junior and Senior cadets. The tournament, organised by the Wadokai Karate Brunei Darussalam and BSRC at the club’s martial arts hall, saw the participants from the Wadokai Karate Brunei Darussalam, the Shitokai Karate Kuala Belait, the Gojukai Karate Group and the Politeknik Lumut Karate Club compete across 30 categories.

Brunei Darussalam Karate Federation (BRUKAF) President Pengiran Haji Yura Kesteria bin Pengiran Setia Negara Dr Haji Mohd Yusof, the guest of honour, presented awards and medals to the winners.

Wadokai Karate Brunei Darussalam President Shihan Haji Sayed Jefferydean bin Haji Sayed Mohammed as well as representatives from various supporters and sponsors of the competition were also present. The competition aimed to showcase the talents of Wadokai Karate members from various age groups.

The competition also featured a special category where medallists and former athletes, who represented the Sultanate in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and ASEAN Games in the 90s, showcased their skills to inspire the next generation of karate athletes. – Daniel Lim
