Judicial commissioner shares insights into commercial law

The Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam on Thursday hosted a lecture titled ‘Trying Commercial Law Cases’, delivered by Judicial Commissioner of the Court of Appeal Sir Peter Gross.

During the lecture, Sir Gross delved into various aspects of commercial law, drawing on his experience and expertise.

He elaborated on the establishment of the Commercial Court in London and shared the key principles of English law relevant to international trade, including case management and contract interpretation.

Sir Gross offered reflections on the significance of the Sultanate’s strong common law tradition, identifying it as a catalyst for commercial and legal development in the country and underscored the numerous opportunities for advancing commercial law and enhancing judicial practices in Brunei.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong and members of the judiciary as well as over 140 attendees from the Judiciary, Attorney General’s Chambers, Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Finance and Economy, Brunei Darussalam Arbitration Centre (BDAC), Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), and the Law Society of Brunei Darussalam.

Sir Gross’ lecture served as a platform for exchanging knowledge and ideas, furthering Brunei’s commitment to legal excellence and fostering collaboration in commercial law. – Fadley Faisal
