Johor fire dept issues almost 500 fire hazard notices

ANN/THE STAR – The Johor Fire and Rescue Department has issued nearly 500 notices to shopping malls and supermarkets, urging them to address fire hazards in public areas.

Director of the Johor Fire and Rescue Department Siti Rohani Nadir, stated that these notices were issued following the department’s annual inspections, particularly during festive seasons.

Last year, inspections of 775 premises resulted in 498 notices being issued to building owners for non-compliance with fire safety regulations. Emphasising the importance of functional fire safety systems like break glass fire alarms, fire hydrants, extinguishers, and hose reels, she made these remarks to reporters at the launch of the state-level Hari Raya Fire Safety Campaign.

This year, between January and March 30, the department conducted 318 inspections and issued 162 notices.

“Fire hazards do not only cover the safety system but also the surrounding items, such as the grill doors or items that are blocking the way for residents or members of the public to escape and save themselves during emergencies,” she added.
