IU takes legal action

SEOUL (ANN/THE KOREA HERALD) – Renowned singer-actor IU has taken legal action by initiating a civil lawsuit, seeking compensation from an individual who had previously raised plagiarism allegations against her.

Local media outlets reported on Thursday that South Korean police have forwarded the pertinent information related to the individual to court, marking a significant development in the ongoing legal battle.

IU, at 31 years old, has been entangled in a legal dispute aimed at securing compensation for what her representatives argue was defamation through groundless acts of slander.

Following the investigators’ exoneration of IU from plagiarism allegations in September, her agency, Edam Entertainment, proceeded to file charges against the individual who initially raised suspicions.

Edam Entertainment released a statement, asserting, “We (the agency) are currently checking the information (of the accuser) in accordance with the law and cannot disclose the details as of yet.”

The agency emphasised its firm stance against attacks directed at the singer.

In pursuit of justice, IU is seeking KRW30 million (USD23,000) in compensation for the damages she claims were inflicted by the false allegations.

The legal battle stems from accusations in May, where IU was accused of plagiarising the work of others in six of her songs. However, legal authorities determined that the accusations did not meet the criteria for a criminal charge.

It’s worth noting that while IU was the singer for all six songs in question, her involvement in composing was limited to only one of them, which was not included in the copyright violation allegations.

The ongoing legal proceedings will determine the resolution of this contentious issue.
