The Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday inked an Air Services Agreement with the Government of Malaysia in Langkawi, Malaysia.
Signing on behalf of the Government of His Majesty was Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, while was Minister of Transport Anthony Loke Siew Fook signed for the Malaysian government.
The renewed agreement was an update of the Air Services Agreement signed on February 14, 1992, where transportation rights between Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia have improved.
The modernisation of the Air Services Agreement is intended to ensure that both countries’ commercial air transport services can be implemented liberally and in accordance with the latest standards and guidelines provided by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), including regulations and legislation in both countries.
It also improves air connectivity and opens cooperation opportunities between designated airlines and destinations between the two countries.
Also present to witness the signing of the agreement were Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, and High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to Malaysia Brigadier General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mahmud bin Haji Saidin @ Haji Mohd Saidin, Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary also attended the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 (LIMA 23), held in Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC), Langkawi, Malaysia, from May 23 to 27.
LIMA 23 is the 16th exhibition organised jointly by the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Defence bi-annually. Also taking place at the exhibition are air transport and maritime conferences, joined by a delegation from administrators, regulators, and international commercial stakeholders exhibiting various commercial maritime and aerospace products and the latest technological products.
Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary also held a goodwill meeting with Minister of Transport and the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation of Somalia separately to discuss further cooperation as well as exchange views on issues and challenges faced by both countries.
Brunei’s delegation also included Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, Ir Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof, and senior ministry officials.
