Host of events mark anti-corruption day

Some 23 youth from various academic backgrounds participated in a Corruption Prevention Talk and Workshop at the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) headquarters in Jalan Lapangan Terbang Lama, Berakas recently.

The programme organised in collaboration with the Youth and Sports Department of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports was held in conjunction with International Anti-Corruption Day 2023.

The talk and workshop provided youth a platform to discuss and exchange ideas with ACB about ways they can contribute towards the fight against corruption in the Sultanate.

The programme also aimed to increase understanding and awareness about the crime and dangers of corruption among youth and to involve them in the fight against corruption by sharing knowledge learnt from the programme with their families and friends.

ACB also formally launched a Corruption Prevention Gallery – Galeri Wiqaya, an exhibition room dedicated towards showcasing the efforts and activities on prevention works carried out by the ACB over the years.

ACB Director Datin Paduka Hajah Anifa Rafiza binti Haji Abdul Ghani officiated the launch.

The recitation of Surah Yaasiin and Tahlil ceremony was also held at the Royal Mausoleum for Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam and Al-Marhumah Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Bendahara Pengiran Anak Abdul Rahman, the late parents of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang
Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, and for His Majesty’s late son Al-Marhum His Royal Highness Prince Haji ‘Abdul ‘Azim in conjunction with this year’s International Anti-Corruption Day celebration.

ACB Deputy Director Syed Azmal bin Syed Ali led the ACB delegation.

Meanwhile, a Friday sermon titled ‘Do not betray the trust you are entrusted with’, was read in all mosques and suraus in the Sultanate on December 8, in a joint initiative with the Mosque Affairs Department of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

The Friday sermon emphasised that abuse of power is prohibited in Islam and from the legal perspective, abuse of power is a criminal offence. Among the offences related to the abuse of power are corruption and criminal breach of trust. The public can help prevent the abuse of power by reporting it to law enforcement agencies including ACB if it is related to corruption and misconduct in public office.

International Anti-Corruption Day is marked every December 9.
