Hockey fun at Bandarku Ceria

Local hockey enthusiasts took part in a number of street hockey-related activities in the capital yesterday as part of weekly Bandarku Ceria activities.

The ‘Hockey Morning in Brunei’ event, organised by the High Commission of Canada in Brunei Darussalam, was held in conjunction with the 40th anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations between the Sultanate and Canada.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad, joined the event, trying his skills with a hockey stick.

Throughout the day, hockey enthusiasts played friendly matches and tested their skills at passing and shooting aid with coaches from Omni Sports International, the co-organiser of the event.

A demo of street hockey was also conducted by Inline Skate Brunei.

A number of participants also participated in a round-robin tournament.

“We are happy to be a part of Bandarku Ceria and introduce street hockey to Bruneians.

Street hockey is a common activity for both children and adults in Canada. It can be played almost anywhere, with very little necessary equipment. It is an accessible physical activity for everyone,” said Canadian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Ambra Dickie.

She hopes that the game is taken up by more Bruneians and perhaps even introduced to schools.

“The 40 years of diplomatic relations have formed the foundation of a lasting friendship between our two countries,” she said, adding that the event is a reminder that sports and culture are a fundamental – and fun – part of diplomacy. – Lyna Mohamad
