Globe-trotting duo touched by Bruneian hospitality

Gloria Chee Shin Yi and her husband Fan Yuhu embarking on a journey around the world by electric car, are in the Sultanate for a brief stay.

This is the third time Fan Yuhu, who is from China, has visited Brunei. In his previous adventure ‘A Man Conquered The Earth’, he travelled to six continents alone in his van in search of his life partner and was in Brunei in 2022 and 2023. He wrote a book on his journey and received encouraging response from readers worldwide.

The latest journey with his wife Gloria, a Malaysian, started in Johor Bahru, Malaysia on September 16. They headed to Thailand, Laos, Yunnan and Cambodia before heading back to Malaysia to travel to Kota Kinabalu.

On February 3, the couple arrived in the Sultanate.

Fan Yuhu said, “We want to challenge ourselves by using an electric vehicle (BYD Otto 3) for long distance drives. We are looking at travelling to some 100 countries in 800 days. We will head to Miri, Sarawak next week.”

He added, “In Brunei, we are appreciative that Al-‘Afiah Hotel allows free electric charging as well as breakfast and accommodation.”

Gloria said, “Bruneians are very friendly, warm and helpful. We also feel that people in Brunei are very lucky as education and health coverage are taken care of by the government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.”

The couple also visited Maju Motors, the sole distributor of BYD electric cars in Brunei. They will leave Brunei on February 16. – James Kon
