Global effort in fostering compassion and care

Everyone of us has a role to play in creating a world where compassion and care are fundamental to human experience, especially those facing life-limiting illnesses, said Head of Medical Oncology and Palliative Care Unit Dr Haji Zulkhairi bin Haji Mohamad as Chairperson of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2023.

The Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC) of Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) commemorated its first ever World Hospice and Palliative Care Day campaign on October 13 at PJSC.

Dr Haji Zulkhairi said, “Themed ‘Compassionate Communities. Together for Palliative Care’, the campaign serves as a reminder that palliative care is not confined to healthcare facilities alone but is a responsibility that extends to the very heart of our communities.”

The campaign was commemorated for the first time in recent years, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of palliative care in the healthcare systems and society. The commemoration also serves to reflect on the impact that palliative care is not just on individuals facing life-limiting illnesses but also for their families and loved ones.

Executive Director of PJSC Dr Haji Mazrul Adimin bin Haji Besar was the guest of honour.

Dr Haji Zulkhairi added, “Compassionate communities are those where individuals, families, and institutions unite to provide support, comfort, and understanding to those who need it most, particularly during challenging times.

“These communities recognise that caring for someone with a serious illness is not solely the responsibility of healthcare professionals but a shared duty that touches all of us.

Alhamdulillah, with the ‘sifat pemedulian’ instilled in our culture as shown during COVID-19, our population can play a role in building compassionate communities in the context of palliative care”.

A religious talk on ‘Dealing With Grief and Loss’ was delivered by Khairul Nazif bin Haji Damit to share tips about dealing with grief and loss after the passing of a family member or friend.
