Forum discusses mental health from Islamic perspective

In an effort to raise awareness on mental health among students, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) held a forum, ‘Stress Ku Eh! Guide to Academic Management and Well-being’, sharing methods to manage stress and care for mental health from the Islamic perspective.

The forum, conducted by the Counselling Services Unit, Student Affairs Office and UNISSA Friends UMAT was held at the university’s auditorium yesterday.

UNISSA’s Acting Rector Dr Hajah Lilly Suzana binti Haji Shamsu was among those in attendance.

The panel made up of Senior Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Usuluddin, UNISSA Dr Elsayyed Amin and President of Persatuan Kemajuan Insan (KESAN) Md Najib bin Latif.

Organised in conjunction with World Mental Health Day, the forum also covered societal stigma surrounding faith and the mentally ill. The forum also featured a mini exhibition from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Psychiatry Services, Ministry of Health, Royal Brunei Airlines (Counselling) and KESAN.

Various activities were also carried out as part of the Mind to Heart programme such as a bazaar, art theraphy workshop and UMAT-zing Race.

The programme, running throughout this month, aims to raise awareness on mental health and methods to tackle the crisis. – Lyna Mohamad
