A Town Hall Forum on “Thinking Big in a Small Market: How to Build a Successful Business in Brunei” was organised by Asia Inc Forum as part of its TRANSFORM 2023 Program. The event took place on Thursday at the Radisson Hotel.
In his opening remarks, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Dr Abdul Fattaah touched on the forum’s theme. He suggested the mindset and qualities required for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to not only survive but thrive in a market that may be small but offers abundant opportunities.
During the next session, titled “How to Grow a Business in Brunei,” Managing Director of Adinin Group of Companies Haji Musa bin Haji Adnin, engaged in a conversation with Chairman of Asia Inc Forum Dato Timothy Ong. He shared his entrepreneurial journey and the lessons he learned in establishing a business in Brunei and beyond. He also discussed the leadership qualities necessary to scale a business into a larger operation.
In the session on “How to Stay Resilient and Find Opportunities in a Small Market,” three young entrepreneurs— Co-Founder of Ricardo’s Catering Mari Gonzalez; Founder of Super Thirteen Streetwear Mizi Bahrin; and Co-Founder of Superfish Growers Willy Lee —shared their perspectives and experiences in developing resilience as founders. They also discussed the methods they employ to strengthen the resilience of their own businesses.
The following session featured the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UCSI Consulting Group from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Dr Raj Kumar, a certified Blue Ocean Strategy consultant. He addressed the topic “How SMEs Can Innovate and Achieve Growth.” Dr Raj introduced a new concept called “creative non-disruption,” which is a business strategy that allows SMEs to innovate and create without necessarily disrupting their market or industry.
The Town Hall Forum drew an audience of over 130 business owners, founders, entrepreneurs, and MSME managers from various industries. This diverse group represented a cross-section of Brunei’s economy.
