The Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered a Bangladeshi national to settle a BND31,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to possessing 31 cartons of a variety brand smuggled cigarettes.
Masud Miah, 29, would have to serve 14 months’ jail in default of paying the fine. The defendant admitted before Magistrate Nursariy Shahmina Jaffri that the cigarettes were discovered by a team of Customs preventive officers at his work quarters in a basement car park of a building in Jalan Pandan 7 in the Belait District on November 18. The cigarettes were ordered to be destroyed. – Fadley Faisal
