Focus, discipline, unity key to sporting success, says minister

Athletes need to maintain focus, motivation and be one-hearted to bring success and glory to the country and create history in the sport arena, said Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad.

He said this yesterday during a national flag handing over ceremony for the Brunei contingent heading to the 11th BIMPNT-EAGA Friendship Games 2024 in Puerto Princesa, the Philippines from December 1-5.

The minister said, “The participation of Brunei Darussalam in the 11th BIMPNT-EAGA Friendship Games 2024 reflects the country’s commitment in strengthening relations with neighbouring countries in the BIMPNT-EAGA region. The initiative not only fosters closer friendship but also strengthens the spirit of unity and peace among member countries.

“The competition also provides an opportunity for cultural exchange whereby we can share experience, tradition and cultural values to help increase understanding and appreciation among each other. Therefore display our culture with pride and strengthen cooperation for a more harmonious future,” the minister said.

He emphasised the importance for all athletes to be vigilant against the use of prohibited substances such as medications and supplements.

“Intake of unidentified or prohibited substance can not only lead to disqualification but also risk of suspension from participating in competitions.

“Therefore, it is important to make sure all preparations and participation comply with the rules as well as maintain high sports ethics,” he said.

He also highlighted the important of discipline, physical and mental preparation before and during the competition.

He reminded the contingent to always protect the good name of the country and to not allow a small mistake to tarnish its reputation.

“Maintaining the country’s image is a shared trust which must be respected with full responsibility, not just on the sports field but everywhere athletes are,” the minister said. – James Kon
