Five Gen Z trends expected to influence the future of travel in Asia

(ANN/THE NATION) – Digital travel platform Agoda reveals the leading five travel habits of Asian Gen Z, showing a generation that seeks inspiration online, welcomes spontaneity, and appreciates shared experiences.

The survey emphasises the distinctive method that travelers aged 18-27, referred to as Gen Z, are influencing the future of travel in Asia through a fresh perspective, not just by impacting travel trends but also by setting the stage for future generations to discover the world in creative manners.

TikTok inspiration: social media is the new travel guide

Gen Z is forging a path on social media, with TikTok at the forefront as their primary source of travel inspiration. While Millennials rely on friends and family for recommendations, Gen Z turns to TikTok (20 per cent) and Instagram (14 per cent) to discover their next adventure. Despite the digital influence, personal referrals come in second (17 per cent), demonstrating that word-of-mouth still has significant influence.

Spontaneous spirit: Last-minute bookings on the rise

In a world where plans can shift rapidly, Gen Z welcomes the excitement of spontaneous travel more than any other generation. 20 per cent of Gen Z arranges flights with less than a week’s notice, surpassing Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers. Accommodations reflect this trend, as one in four Gen Z travelers reserves at the last minute, highlighting their love for spontaneity.

Traveling in tandem: Partnered adventures take the lead

For Gen Z, travel is a shared experience, as 38 per cent choose to discover the world alongside a companion. Travelling in groups with friends and family vacations also rank high, emphasising the value of connection and companionship during their travels. In contrast, Millennials emphasise family trips, indicating a generational shift in travel dynamics.

Cost-conscious journeys: Spending habits align across generations

Regarding travel expenses, Gen Z and Millennials share similar views. Both generations like to maintain lodging expenses below USD50 per person per night, with Gen Z showing a stronger preference (56 per cent) than Millennials (44 per cent). At the same time, 32 per cent of Gen Z intend to spend between USD51-100 per person each night in contrast to 41 per cent of Millennials. This trend highlights a collective dedication to budget-friendly travel while maintaining quality experiences.

Wanderlust unites: The desire to travel transcends generations

Although various generations have distinct preferences for travel inspiration sources, booking times, and travel companions, the urge to discover the world is shared by all. Almost 50 per cent of Gen Z and Millennials intend to take 1-3 trips this year, whereas one-third are targeting 4-6 excursions. This common desire to explore connects different generations, demonstrating that the passion for travel has no limits.

Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President, Supply at Agoda shared, “Gen Z is redefining travel with their digital-first approach and spontaneous spirit. At Agoda, we’re thrilled to support their adventures with diverse options and the best deals in accommodations, flights and activities, ensuring every trip is as unique as they are.”
