Evolving landscape hurting construction industry

I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding the evolving landscape of public project implementation in the country, specifically its repercussions on design consultants.

Traditionally, these projects have sustained design consultants through competitive bidding processes, albeit with fees often just covering operational costs. However, recent shifts towards in-house implementation by institutions threaten the viability of these consultancy firms.

Many design consultants, integral to Brunei’s construction sector, are now facing dire circumstances. Some are compelled to downsize, while others are forced to shutter their operations altogether. This shift not only jeopardises their livelihoods but also raises broader economic implications for the industry.

The immediate consequence is a decline in opportunities for architects, engineers and quantity surveyors, which will inevitably lead to lower salaries and diminish the attractiveness of these professions. Over time, this could culminate in a shortage of skilled professionals, adversely affecting the quality and progress of future construction projects.

It is imperative that these developments are communicated transparently by relevant authorities. Such transparency will enable design consultants to adapt their strategies accordingly, ensuring the sustainability of the construction industry and safeguarding its future growth.

It is thus crucial for policymakers and stakeholders to consider the profound impacts of these changes. By fostering open dialogue and strategic planning, we can mitigate potential setbacks and build an environment conducive to the continued success of construction professionals.
