Efforts needed to promote responsible pet ownership

The topic of responsible pet ownership has been brought up a tonne of times in public forums but despite that, pets continue to be abandoned, with some getting killed by cars or wild animals.

As someone with a rescued cat, I find it hard to believe that there are people out there who have no qualms about leaving helpless animals by the side of the road or in the middle of an industrial zone.

It is high time for a proper campaign to be carried out nationwide, to help the public understand the importance of responsible pet ownership. It’s not enough to depend on the few non-profit organisations to rehome these abandoned animals. If anything, the existence of these NGOs is taking away the guilt of irresponsible pet owners as they “know” that someone is going to rescue their unwanted pets.

My vision of the country is one that is without stray animals in commercial areas. But it cannot be achieved for as long as there are people who recklessly take on pets only to discard them when they are no longer convenient.
