Drain cover theft ends in two-month jail sentence

The Magistrate’s Court yesterday sentenced a 39-year-old local man to two months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to stealing two metal drain covers from a tuition centre.

Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif handed down the sentence to Muhammad Mustajir bin Haji Hariah following his guilty plea.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Musawwir bin Haji Awang Mahli revealed that the theft occurred between November 18 and 20.

The defendant, along with an accomplice, drove to a tuition centre and stole two metal drain covers worth BND240.

The theft came to light on November 19, when the complainant was informed by a worker about a missing drain cover. CCTV footage revealed a car arriving at the centre, and a man was seen taking a drain cover. The complainant later found another drain cover missing and filed a police report. Police investigations identified the defendant and led to his arrest. During questioning, the defendant admitted to forming the intention to steal the drain covers while driving with his accomplice.

After taking the covers, they sold them along with other scrap for BND37, which they split for personal use.

The stolen drain covers were not recovered. The defendant has no prior property-related convictions. – Fadley Faisal
