A group of five dental students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) organised a ‘Bad Breath Awareness Campaign’ during the World First Aid Day celebration hosted by Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) and the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society at BIBD Connects Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas recently.

The campaign, conducted under the supervision of Dr Jagjit Singh Dhaliwal, Dr Joe Knights and Dr Haji Amirul Rizan bin Haji Mohammed, was aimed to educate the public on bad breath and reduce the stigma surrounding the subject.

Bad breath (halitosis) is the third most common reason for referral to dental clinics, following dental caries and periodontal diseases. Attendees were briefed on the causes, effects and management of bad breath.

As young adults are at a period of time in their lives where they are transitioning into adulthood, they would be more self-conscious of their presentation.

The project also aimed at raising awareness on bad breath among pre-university and university students.

The campaign was also conducted through visits and exhibitions including at Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College, Tutong Sixth Form Centre, Belait Sixth Form Centre, and Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences, UBD, as well as through radio segments, Bandarku Ceria and social media platforms.
